If Hampton signs LOI in Jan

But decided to play MLB, does that still count against the 25?

so will that give us an extra scholarship for next years class?

no. It's a lost scholarship if he plays MLB

No. If a school signs someone it counts whether that person ever sets foot on campus or not. The only thing it doesn’t count against is the 85 total. That’s why schools are so careful with kids who may be academic risks.

Technically couldn’t he hold off till after the MLB draft? Idk if we’d keep a spot for him, but we could and couldn’t we still backcount a EE next year if we took under the 25?
Seems like a better idea than signing him and losing the spot to the MLB draft

I know a guy can't play football on a baseball scholarship, but I wonder if he could sign a baseball LOI to lock himself in, then get a football scholly if and when he shows up to school.

Yes, that is the best option for LSU... it’s just very tough overall situation due to the timing and the talent/skill set of the recruit.

Yes. So if Hampton signs with LSU to me that is an indication he does not plan to go the the MLB immediately but instead plans to first play three years of CFB and baseball at LSU.

That only works if we have a spot left in our 25. Plus baseball is not a full scholly in most cases.

The problem there is the very limited number of baseball scholarships. Do you really think PM would agree to possibly pissing one away?

Not really...he can just secure his spot at LSU. And then whatever happens with the draft, he can decide then.

Or he would sign to lock in his spot with LSU if the pro thing doesn’t work out. The only time we will know his commitment to football is if he drops in the baseball draft.
My question is can he sign a contract with a MLB team that states he can still play college football? I know there have been guys like Murray and Russell Wilson that did this after playing college baseball but has anyone ever done it after high school?

He doesn't need to lock himself in.
He can sign a scholarship with LSU after the baseball draft.
Justin Jefferson didn't even commit to LSU until August 8th of 2017. He signed scholarship papers and enrolled that month, if not that very day.

Baseball manages this problem every year. They routinely sign more guys than they have roster spots for expecting to lose some to the MLB draft. I don't think the baseball numbers need to be sorted out until the fall.
Also, it's not like football where they've tried to eliminate over-signing. I think in baseball, they can sign as many as they want as long as the roster is right at some point in the fall.
Of course, I'm not an expert on baseball recruiting, but I really don't think him signing for baseball would end up in PM pissing away a spot.

Cant they give the open scholarship to an current walk on?

This is why I don't understand how Alabama is signing more than 25 in this class

I highly doubt we're going to have any open scholarships this year. Last I looked, we only have 14 open scholarships for next year (12 scholarship seniors leaving + Greedy leaving + 1 spot we had open from last year). This means, that in order to fit under the 85 player scholarship limit, for each player over 14 that we sign, we're going to have to make room by either processing guys, guys transferring out, or guys declaring early for the draft.
So, assume White leave for the draft, that gives us 15 spots. We will still need to make 10 more spots to sign a full class.
To me, this is the bigger issue with taking Rodney Sopsher. Him taking a spot is going to take a spot from a guy who's already on the team.

What's the confusion? They only counted between 20-22 guys in their 2018-2019 signing class. This leaves them 3-5 extra spots to "back count" guys in the this year's class.
