1. you likely only get 2 years of eligibility. so you have to have been developed already.
2. most JUCO players aren't fully SEC ready coming out of the gates even if they are high profile and their "tape looks good".
3. High schoolers can develop into something while JUCOs seem to just be a bust and done.
4. It seems like a canary in the coal mine for some position groups like the O and D line. If O wants to really get physical in the trenches, then we have to start hitting on these high profile high schoolers instead of missing out and filling in with JUCO backups. He was supposed to get all of the top linemen to come here with his great recruiting but I'm not convinced. He missed out on Wilson and a couple other guys, and it's not looking good for this recruiting cycle with most of the DL targets. Plus the top guy for next year already decommitted but there is time with that.
idk...I'm absolutely jumping the gun, assuming the worst and I'm sure I'll be eating the majority of these words one day (probably next week) but I'm not pumped about this Fonua guy. I'd rather not sign anyone and keep an additional scholy for 2020. I love our recruiting class rn outside of this though! Looking forward to signing day! Hope we get some big recruits!
I completely agree with you dude. You are a real life rocket scientist.
Cam
Holy shite Cam! I totally agree. That dude is a genius.
Mett
Man, you are all fricking morons. That dude is full retard

The reason you bring in a JUCO is so he can start right away, like D. Lewis.
Otherwise, it's not a great end game.

I think if any player provides at least one year and fills a position at a high level for that year while others are currently developing then you've done your job as a coach filling spots of need.
Say Traore wasn't ready last year so we RS him. What if he develops this year or next and he fills a OT spot in one of those years while another HS player isn't ready to play and is still developing. Then he's done his job as a coach and recruiter. Of course it's better to go out and get a 5* OT who has 4 years to give BUT that's not the case right now so we need to fill spots until we can get there as a team and program.

Alabama had a juco starter on D
And our starting right guard was a juco. Orgeron called him our best lineman. Our QB was also a JUCO.

I would typically prefer high school recruits over JUCO as well but considering we watched a WR playing corner and an Olineman play Dline in the bowl game, in addition to position changing they had to do during the season because of depth issues, I’m just happy to see them fill the class and not “hold spots” only to get left out in the cold again.
JUCO and 3* are better than unused scholarships IMO

JUCO players have their place and add value. There are numerous examples of bust and star. Over the years we've had some significant JUCO players, and under Miles we didn't dip into too much. Lewis was a HUGE addition this year considering Ingram. And let's not forget about Mett and what he did at LSU.
The first question has to be why they were at JUCO in the first place. If it was slow development or "late bloomer" then I'm not a fan. Those should be developed at our level of competition to have value later. Being developed at the JUCO level, slowly or late, then jumping to the SEC just doesn't lend itself to success. We are in agreement on that.
Let's look at Lewis- came in with great size and very good strength and average technique. He struggled at times. Did very well considering, but lacked consistency. That's rare.
For linemen, both sides, I think JUCO guys are binary. Boom or bust. For OL, I'm very wary because even the best incoming SEC freshman OL has to develop to be "good". The assignments, the S&C (incl. facilities and guidance), the competition (especially practice), etc. just isn't there. Again, look at Lewis- he came in light years ahead of your avg. JUCO OL, and still was a slightly above average OG.
So is that built-like-a-tank DL in JUCO because of he got in trouble? Great, time for a second chance. Or is it because he has 55 lbs of bad weight and moves like a WWI tanks and got no offers? No thanks.

Agreed. I like to stay positive but I don't get why everyone is so rah-rah over this guy. He will probably barely see the field during his two years in BR.

Coach O will pull a juco kid every year.
