how was this kid a 3 star? and i'm not saying this after he surprised people, i'm saying it now

big kid with a cannon who was once seen as the savior of MSU football...a 3 star? how does this happen?
I see him as similar in talent to Jefferson. A whole lot depends upon wheather he gets on the field.

I've thought pretty much since signing day that CG might be the sleeper of this class.

Would like to see him RS and get 2 years separation from JJ....that would give him 2 years to start after JJ leaves.

Rivals has admitted to sucking balls scouting Mississippi. That and how much exposure did he really have in camp circuits? Not many I'd imagine.

I think its funny because a lot of people were complaining how overrated his arm strength was and from what I've seen, he looks to have a strong arm...especially compared to RS.

People constantly say this, but I didn't see it in the film. I think with his frame (6'4"ish and 220+), people assume he's got a cannon for an arm. I think he's got an above average arm, but if you watch his film, it's not like he's drilling balls downfield. If anything, he tends to put a little too much air under the ball (especially down the sidelines) to make up for a little bit of a lack of armstrength.

His best asset is his accuracy particularly in the intermediate passing game. He puts the ball on the money, in stride... but he's not in the same realm of raw armstrength as Jefferson.

ETA: As I was watching his film last year, he reminded me a lot of Chris Chandler (the old Atlanta Falcons QB).

How many HS kids don't "air it out"? Hell, in HS it's either a quick slant or a heave it up and let somebody catch it.

I'm talking about in man-coverage on rail routes where his guy has two or three steps and he puts too much air under the ball and underthrows his man. There are plenty of instances on his tape where I immediately thought... "that's a pick in college." Like I said, he's got an above average arm, but I'm not real sure where the common mindset came from on this board that he has a "cannon for an arm." Just watch his film. Good but not great armstrength. Great mechanics and great accuracy for someone his age.

Major Applewhite said he couldn't play in the SEC. Considering how Applewhite is a horrible QB coach, this just makes me feel better about Garrett. One of the first things McElwain did when he replaced Applewhite as OC at bama was offer Garrett a scholly.

quote:

"We called Alabama and Major Applewhite said point blank that he wasn't interested and didn't think that he could play in the SEC," Tupelo coach Eric Collins said. "Game over. (Coach Nick) Saban's response, according to Collins, was that his program now has a new offensive coordinator in Jim McElwain and "Coach McElwain loves the guy."
"I said, I will mention it to Chris, and if there's any ray of hope I will let you know, but I can tell you now that I believe that Chris is solid with LSU.'"

Garrett was solid with LSU.

Yeah...Miles is still stuck in that antiquated 2007ish style of offense that won the NC. That would never work in today's college football. Hopefully, he realizes that times have changed.

however, the fact that late in the year we packed in our offense (and got 5 times shittier in the process) makes me think he didn't get the memo

You really would have wanted a more wideopen offense with Jarrett Lee at QB? If anything, we were way too wideopen with him at QB. See the first pass of the game against UGA, a team that we dominated when we ran up the middle.

I think we saw the future of the LSU offense in the GTech game. Mostly spread offense sets, with a mixture of power running in btw. And with no Quinn Johnson, I see even more wideopeness in the future.

we actually had an offense when we did this

we almost lose to troy, get blown out by ole miss, and then lose to arky when we went conservative

which would you rather?

Well, I can't disagree with you on Arky. Though we would have won with any decent DC. As for Ole Miss, Lee may have brought us back against Troy, but OM is a different story.

I just know that we dominated teams like Georgia and Auburn pounding the ball. We tried to go wideopen against Georgia on the first play of the game, and you see what happened. We could have maybe beat them had we just stuck to Charles Scott and playaction (though probably not considering Malveto ).

Alabama is another game. Scott has a big first half, but Lee throws the game away. Maybe we win if we're more conservative in that one.

I just think it was a Jarrett Lee problem and not a scheme problem. Lee just was incapable of reading defenses and making plays in the spread offense. JJ showed in the GTech game already much much better ability to do that than Lee ever did.

Better question....how good is the LSU recruiting staff to recognize his abilities?
