That's a name. Zadock Dinkelman is another one. I forgot his story but I know early on he was a highly rated recruit and we either gave him an offer early or he committed early, then fell off the face of the earth essentially before he got to any college.

He was big going into 8th grade and Crowton knew about him because he was Mormon and related to Ty Detmer. But he was never ranked highly once he started playing in HS.

Grant Gunnell

Zach Lee
remember all these names. Those 4+ year old QB "future NFL legends" damn near never work out (Zadock), Arch Manning will be another. Zach Lee was never going to be as good people wanted him to be. He was the hope many latched on to because our QBs sucked. I only briefly about Gunnell, so I can't make many statements on him.

Gunner Kiel though. I thought this guy could be great for us, but he became the infamous "no chest" LSU meme. In his 3rd year in college after a redshirt transfer from his initial place ND and Brian Kelly, he lit it up for Cincinnati. Had some of us thinking "what if". In his second year he still looked good minus the injuries. Because of injuries and I guess perceived to be below the starter, the dude barely played as a redshirt senior, only when the starter was injured.

This is why I hope and believe Howard will become the guy we've been waiting for since got damn JaMarcus Russell. We haven't had a QB come straight from high school and be a star at LSU since Russell. Even then, Russell was only a star in his junior season. Bama has been spoiled with McCarron who wasn't elite, but became a great QB his last 2 years. Then Blake Sims for a year, then Jalen Hurts as a true freshman, then Tua as a freshman and redshirt freshman then Mac Jones as a sophomore and junior then Bryce Young and likely Milroe will follow behind.

Hopefully Kelly, Denbrock, and Sloan can home grow Howard and Collins. I would put Nuss, but unless he asserts himself this year, he won't start for LSU in the future.

If I remember right, he matured early so he stood out amongst his peers and got way over ranked early.

This applies to a lot of 2024 and 2025 recruits we are all talking up right now.

It is incredible how bad the services are at rating QBs. If you looked at the ratings on our last 15 or so QBs, Joe Burrow would rank 12th, just after the triumvirate of Anthony Jennings, Max Johnson and Jordan Jefferson.

He also played against weak competition. He transferred from The Woodlands (6A) down to private school. Probably wasn’t used to the game speed once he got to college.

That's why senior evaluations are more important because you can see progression wise where each recruit matured

Especially at the qb position. I wouldn’t make an offer on a guy as a sophomore or even a junior unless he was obviously an exceptional talent

But when you watch the film he has a noodle arm and most of it was the system. When he got into camps it was painfully obvious that his arm wasn't big time D-1 level.

100% false. He stood out at camps and got offers from every camp he attended. He has plenty of arm. Here is a recent NFL scouting report.

quote:

Enough arm strength to drive the ball through tight windows up to 20 yards downfield. Spreads the ball around to multiple receivers.

Possesses an NFL arm. Gets the ball from one hash to the opposite sideline in a hurry. Has the zip to hit tight windows on short and intermediate throws

He had injury issues, a shoulder at Arizona and an Achillles at Memphis.

Lee had the makings of a good QB, he chased the money to the MLB. He probably would have made a far better football player.

I coached against his Dad in the Woodlands area. Dad was very self-entitled and arrogant and I'm sure that trickled down to the kids work ethic.

Good kid and a smart kid.

Attended a smaller school where he could start at QB instead of going to the 6A Woodlands High School and competing for the job.

I don't know about that. The Woodlands didn't have any QB prospects when Gunnell was there.

I think what is also overlooked is that Gunnell got too tall. He is over 6'6 and that just doesn't work unless you are a freak athlete like Herbert. Most QBs over 6'5 are not good. Kid was better as a 6'3 8th grader than he was as a 6'6 senior.

athletemed is 100% accurate. Dad is the issue, not the player. Plus he did injure his shoulder at AZ and Achilles at Memphis.

Also don’t forget he played his first 2 years in the Sumlin/Mazzonne “QB System”. He is lucky he is still playing football

I seriously beg to differ. Kid had a strong arm, was very mobile, and based on the summer workouts before he took the MLB money, was very impressive in his accuracy.

In hindsight, Zach should've played college football. But big MLB money is hard to turn down... even when it typically leads to broken dreams.

With QBs, so many of the top recruits are over-trained, so they look really good compared to more physically talented peers. Once those peers get noticed and start getting better coaching at camps and such, it all starts to come into focus.
