Grant Gunnell - The Rise and Fall

Anyone remember Grant Gunnell, a blue-chip QB who was all LSU a couple classes ago? Attended LSU junior day, Houston kid, was at one point ranked as a 0.9818 recruit on 247 and finished his junior year as one of the top-ranked QBs in the nation. I remember thinking he would finally be LSU's star non-transfer QB (this was before Burrow 2019 mind you)
He finished his senior year as a 0.8851 recruit, ranked #444 overall and committed to Arizona. He then transferred to Memphis and this year transferred to UNT to finally get some playing time... only to be named the backup. Anyone have a gander on what happened to this kid? Crazy for such a highly rated player as a HS junior to have such an unnoteworthy career!
247
Note: Jayden Daniels finished as the #3 QB that class so I think we got the better end of the deal lol

Recruiting is an imperfect science

It’s not even a science lol

Exactly. The NFL has the best football minds in the world in the front office and gets it right about 50% of the time if they’re lucky.

If I remember right, he matured early so he stood out amongst his peers and got way over ranked early. But as he progressed through high school, he never ended up being as talented as his early ranking would have suggested.

Same trajectory as Jalen Curry they were HS teammates I believe both signed for arizona

Kids who mature early get high initial rankings.
They often get passed up by others.

That's a name. Zadock Dinkelman is another one. I forgot his story but I know early on he was a highly rated recruit and we either gave him an offer early or he committed early, then fell off the face of the earth essentially before he got to any college.

Its honestly impressive how many they get right based on the amount of total recruits each year.

Had a huge frame. Had some bad injuries to his knee I believe.

He was ranked high due to potential. He stood out polish wise so the assumption was his ceiling would be very high. He ended up peaking out his junior year which is why he declined. That's why senior evaluations are more important because you can see progression wise where each recruit matured. You can find the late bloomers and see that others are progressing like they should.

Did not even know that.

He got the Dylan Moses Syndrome

Grant was a big kid with insane numbers. Something like 70 touchdowns one year
But when you watch the film he has a noodle arm and most of it was the system. When he got into camps it was painfully obvious that his arm wasn't big time D-1 level.

shite happens ... HS recruiting is so unpredictable
5-star, #1 LB in the country, leaves after 1 year > AZ Western JUCO > UAB > disappeared off the planet.
CG had the talent yet got to college a DGAF. Gaming and partying were more important than CFB. Hard to imagine his poor work ethic since his dad played professional baseball (5 yrs in the Minors)
edit: just did some research. It appears Garrett had 0 tackles for his entire D1 career (LSU and UAB). He had a total of 26 tackles and 1 sack in 11 JUCO games. Obvious he peaked in HS and got to college and just quit on himself and teams that he signed with.

Billy Embody said he had some character concerns as well. Said he regularly threw fits at 7v7 tournaments.

The old 12 year old baseball logic. He peaked before others and when they caught up he wasn't so good anymore. Common in Texas

So true, Sampah #4 LB, Webb #5 Edge, D Davis #3 Safety yet to be determined. On and On and on it could go.
