Contrary to popular belief, there isn't an infinite supply of money. Perhaps LSU put a top line amount on what they were willing to pay and South Carolina exceeded it. That happens in negotiations. Where teams (and people) get in trouble is spending way more than they want, or can afford, out of desperation.
