Occasionally you have to sign players on potential or upside. I think we did that with Mingo last year.

yeah, hope that 4-star works out
True, he was a 4* prospect but a lot of his evaluation was on size, athleticism and upside. He just started playing football......so yes, he is a project. I compare his evaluation to Magnum Rolle's 5* evaluation in basketball a few years back. Sometimes they pan out and sometimes they don't.

Who's to say Blackmon is any different from Ash?

That's the thing, I've watched Ash's film on Rivals, and it's not great. He's got some potential certainly, but he is also very raw
i agree, but we dont have the film on blackmon to compare so we cant honestly answer that.

LSU probably felt that they had to grab a DT rather than hope that they can get some elite national guy like Ego Ferguson
but he is still on the board and its not like blackmon had a bunch of offers to consider or anything at this point.

I expect Blackmon will most likely play DT.

Holliday was a saban recruit

or the perception of our D is soft now under Miles' leadership
Bingo. You hit the nail on the head. It's all about PERCEPTION. Thanks to Dr.Frankenstein creating the Mallveto Monster last year, there probably IS the perception that LSU Defense is now soft, a least in the minds of recruits. That perception wont change until the Defense does it on the field. If Chavis, Cooper and Haley can't completely turn it around this season, the perception is going to start gathering strength like a snowball rolling downhill........

Offering Blackmon does seem iffy at this point, but the good thing is that there is a lot of time between now and February to make sure it is a good fit. He is clearly on the radar now, and his performance as a HS Senior will be scrutinized. Maybe it will play out the way it did with Orelus and Willie Ferrell last year. They caught the coaching staff's attention early, were offered & accepted... then (arguably) the staff cooled on them, stopped contacting them, or maybe even let them know that they would likely be buried on the depth chart and encouraged them to look elsewhere. (I don't know that it happened that way, but there was speculation.)
If, on the other hand, Blackmon seems worthy of the offer during his senior year, then by getting him on board early, it improves the odds of him remaining committed.
Also, just because Bama and AU didn't offer doesn't mean he isn't good. One possibility: due to being in a subpar football school in a subpar district, where he hasn't been well evaluated, he may have also suffered from a lack of sound coaching. So, maybe he had no clue what he was doing at the UA/AU camps and was unimpressive, but learned from them and showed progress by the time he got to the LSU camp... I could very well be wrong-- I don't have a clue as to what happens at the camp and what he could improve on, but with everything being speculation at this point, I figured I'd throw out one more point of view.
I didn't read pages 4-13 of this thread, so apologies if I'm covering old ground here.

If Blackmon was commit #10 and not commit #20 would this thread had reached 17 pages?

He might make high quality H20!

the sad reality is for the first time in years "D-Line U" has no major players seriously interested in us. It's sad because it's a crucial area to recruit
wtf?? did you completely miss the defensive players we just signed?
