I haven't seen any positive news since we got Phillips. I think we are all in for a rude awakening on weds. I'm not getting my hopes up too much. Bama cheats and will keep picking our state over every year.

Recruits who go out of state do get a larger cost of attendance stipend. It's a couple thousand more than what in state students will get. If the decision is close it most definitely could be a deciding factor.

It's probably something that needs to be addressed going forward.

I figured the SEC would step in and do something about it but since Auburn and Bama are the ones making a mockery of the system, I doubt we'll see any changes.

This is what happens when people latch on to any kind of optimism and follow it as fact.

He was never going to LSU, people.

Why have you kept your eyes shut since last week? Because I certainly have seen positive things.

The only person on Earth that really thought he would sign with LSU was Jimmy, and since he and Devonta are apparently close, it seems people latched onto his prediction.

Wow, thanks for the link. I never realized how varied "cost of attendance" can be. There is some truth to the claims that Saban is giving his players cars -- it can be listed as a "transportation cost." Wonder why TAF isn't shelling out more $ to keep up with the rest of the SEC?

Can TAF get involved in that? Seems like they wouldn't be able to...

The NCAA opened a can of worms with the cost of attendance stipends and there is no real regulation of what the cost are. They can be easily be manipulated to pay out more if universities are willing to foot the bill.

Yes, Bama has already been manipulating this by inflating the reported cost of living in Tuscaloosa. They will take any advantage they can and LSU, at least under Les, wouldnt push the envelope.

The very first year Bama was paying way less than what they are currently paying. It was readjusted and now Bama pays out 3rd nationally. Only Auburn and Tennessee pay more. I don't know what they did to justify the increase, but I've seen coaches say they don't think the inequality of the payouts impact recruiting and that's just disingenuous.

It definitely matters and I would not be surprised if recruiters are using it as a tool to recruit.

It was done with good intentions, but will wind up being a disaster and there is now way to go back.

I just told you. The cost of living in Tuscaloosa tripled in one year according to Bama's football program. Im serious. It was reported but of course nobody ever bothered making a big fuss about it when its Bama.

Article on Bama's increase

quote:

Earlier this year, Nick Saban, head football coach at the University of Alabama, said he was concerned about the large discrepancies that existed between individual colleges' full cost-of-attendance numbers. Alabama’s full cost of attendance last year put the university in the middle of the Southeastern Conference, allowing athletes there to receive an annual stipend of $3,463. The University of Tennessee's and Auburn University’s stipends, meanwhile, both topped $5,000 per year. (Auburn's cost of attendance did not increase this year, but the amounts that make up the stipend increased by 108 percent in 2014.) During the conference’s spring meetings in May, Saban called foul. “You can't create a system that really can almost promote fraud,” Saban said. “Even in the NFL, they have a salary cap. When we don't have a cap that makes it equal for everybody, it really goes against everything we've tried to do in the NCAA that we've tried to do for parity.” As it turns out, Saban didn’t have much to worry about. Soon after his comments, the University of Alabama increased its cost-of-attendance estimate, and with it the amount Saban’s players could receive as a stipend. Deborah Lane, a spokeswoman for the university, said the cost of attendance was estimated “using the same methods [the university] has always used,” though the increase was much higher than normal. Alabama is now offering one of the largest stipends in college football: $5,386 each year to out-of-state athletes and $4,172 to in-state athletes.

So now we're saying that Devonta Smith is turning his back on Louisiana for an extra $2,000 per year. That's less than 30 pieces of silver.

C'mon, it's not that. He wants to play for Saban. Just accept it.

For all anyone knows he went to Bama yesterday to let them know he's choosing LSU.

Just some things to consider:

His main recruiter and Bama WR coach left.
Rumors of LSU hiring Curtis Johnson. Is he shadow recruiting?
Craig has developed a good relationship with Smith and Canada has given him a good vision of how he fits in the new offense.
Bama made a late push for Henry Ruggs III and signed a teammate. New CB for him to Bama today.

Bama certainly still holds the high ground, but I won't be shocked if LSU wins out.
