The very first year Bama was paying way less than what they are currently paying. It was readjusted and now Bama pays out 3rd nationally. Only Auburn and Tennessee pay more. I don't know what they did to justify the increase, but I've seen coaches say they don't think the inequality of the payouts impact recruiting and that's just disingenuous.

It definitely matters and I would not be surprised if recruiters are using it as a tool to recruit.

It was done with good intentions,but will wind up being a disaster and there is now way to go back.

Alabama’s full cost of attendance last year put the university in the middle of the Southeastern Conference, allowing athletes there to receive an annual stipend of $3,463. The University of Tennessee's and Auburn University’s stipends, meanwhile, both topped $5,000 per year. (Auburn's cost of attendance did not increase this year, but the amounts that make up the stipend increased by 108 percent in 2014.)
