That's the craziest one for me. I don't understand why he decided to hold an announcement ceremony

My loose recollection is that Reuben Randle's dad called the LSU coaches and said if you take Benton, Reuben was going to Bama. They came from same high school. People weren't sure if it was personal between the players or fear of the competition.

Yeah, I don't think Reuben wanted to play with Benton. We ended up on the better end of that deal.

I believe that was Derrick Taylor back in mid 80's . Might have been against Auburn but can't remember

I have a random one for yall. Not really a NSD story, but it's cool. I'm good friends with a former baseball player from the late 90s Bertman squads. He played baseball & football at GCCC. His roommate there was crazy arse Nicky Savoie. he told me a story of his recruiting trip to an lsu football game. I'm thinking it was in 96, the "bring back the magic" year cause his 1st year at lsu was 97. Nicky was already at lsu playing for Dinardo. Well, the story goes... All the recruits are in the corner of the end zone & Savoie catches a TD pass right in front of them. He says Nicky runs through them, looking up at the student section yelling at them in celebration. He says Nicky looks down, sees him, and in his surprise & excitement grabs him and basically head butts him and says something along the lines of "Dude!!!!! This place Is fricking awesome. You gotta come here!!!!" He said he committed to skip the next day, lol

I remember the Benton thing. I actually sat next to him at the LSU-Bama game in 2008 and talked to him. He said he couldn't wait to get to campus and was very enthusiastic about being an LSU Tiger. BTW, it wasn't weird because I'm his age.

It wasn't NSD, but I remember LSU losing a QB commit because the Dad got pissed off after Tim Tebow made an official visit because his son already committed.

It was a dead period so Randle's Dad actually called into the local ESPN radio show. Said LSU lied to them. That they told the Randles one thing and the Bentons something else. He was pissed on the show. Then flat out made LSU choose because both weren't coming.

Wasn't there a player that committed to A&M after a story leaked that he was going to LSU. Apparently the family wasn't happy about the leak. I think he was WR and this was fairly recent.

You are correct and it was against Auburn and he hit a shot from like Midcourt with no time remaining to win the game for LSU. They happen to have a lot of Football Recruits there for the game!

That was my radio show at the time. Fox and company 97.7 in monroe. To add to the story 30 mins after Reubens dad called into the show my secretary came running into the studio saying you need to take a break and take this call.It was the lsu coaches office. After talking to I think Dj Mccarthy at the time i had a nice 20 minute convo with Les. Needless to say it was one of the craziest moments I had in radio.Brad Bradshaw who was the coach at the time at Bastrop later told me we could write one hell of a book about the benton and randle recruiting saga.

No disrespect because I've only been following recruiting the past two years, but could y'all actually start talking about what happened instead of just throwing out names?

You talking about Seals-Jones? I remember the crap the Das was saying about some SEC school offered him 600,000 to come play for them and he honorably turned it down. What a bunch of bullshite. Hell Cam Newton's dad was only offered 180k and he was at least the #1 JUCO recruit and a QB at that.

Very impressive story. Was it personal between them or were they just worried about competition?
