Jalen, welcome to the Tiger Nation!

Is he more if a pass catcher than a blocker?

Shead has narrowed his focus to three programs in LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss.
Shead earned the offer from the Tigers just a few months ago and since that time, hasn't gone a day without speaking with the coaching staff. His primary contact is coach Derek Shay who works with the tight ends.
quote:
"You don't really find many physical tight ends these days, they're mostly just heavy set receivers," Shead said. "I wouldn't label myself as a blocking tight end but that's all teams have seen because that's what I primarily do.
Last year we had two 1,000-yard running backs so I blocked a lot. I'll flex out to receiver this year, I play tight end, defensive end and punter. Nobody's seen my full potential yet."

It was on that second visit to campus, during LSU's shortened spring camp, that Shead was able to hang out with Arik Gilbert, the No. 1 tight end and 2020 LSU commit.
"You expect someone like that to be kind of cocky but he wasn't like that at all," Shead said. "We had some talks, I asked him a lot of questions so it was pretty cool and the vibe with LSU was pretty great."

More blocker than pass catcher.

Damn, a TE that can punt also... Wonder what his distance and hang time are?
Welcome to LSU Jalen!

Is he being brought in as an additional OL that lines up as a tight end? Most of his film was of him blocking, which he did a great job but I thought we were shying away from that type of player.

I’ll take his own words over yours

We’ve been very fortunate to have TEs that both caught well and block well lately. Not every tight end excels at both, some better Receivers some better blockers. You HAVE to be able to seal an edge in college football

I see him as a taller Thad Moss. We didn’t get rid of the blocking tight end, we just want our tight ends to actually catch a ball AND block instead of being a Les Miles 6th lineman

Sounds like an old school football player. Gotta like this guy.

What I like most about the young man is his attitude. Same goes for Sage and many others. I like how Coach O and his staff thinks about team chemistry while recruiting.

Only one year of football. He is a basketball player.
Will require much traIning. Hopefully, a diamond in the rough.
Many people don’t understand it takes years to be at the top of your potential. He is still a young boy in a mans body.
HE WILL BE A FINE LSU FOOTBALL PLAYER. MARK IT

quote:Exactly. Even if you flex out, still have to seal the edge and even turn a defender every now and then to do it.

I guess it is sorta cliche but many forgot just how good Moss was at this (w/Sullivan right behind him). Those jump cuts of CEH's of depended on Moss getting his angle.
In a Les style offense the TE had to block, and sustain it; sometimes had to drive.
In the style we run now, they still have to be able to block, but don't have to sustain the block near about as long. Hence, the physicality requirements drop off.
From everything I've seen here labeling Shead as a "blocking TE" is either unfair, or more accurately- premature. Seems he blocks alot because of the HS's style of offense, not because of his limitations.
