This has a Tony Brown feel to it. Lock for two years that flips to Bama on signing day. Didn’t work out for TB as a prospect for the NFL. Same for Hootie.

I disagree. Tony Brown wasn't as close to Raymond and did not idolize Patrick Peterson like surtain jr does. His dad's ties to Raymond and Louisiana also plays significantly in our favor.

Surtain said told BamaInsider.com. “To be a DB coach at Alabama would be a tremendous honor. Eventually it may happen, but I guess it wasn’t the right time.”

Translation: My son is going to LSU whether Alabama hired me or not

That's about what I got from that....it was the elder Surtain saying..."Y'all know Jrs going to LSU right?"

With Surtain Jr. It's about the coaching staff getting him to the next level as quickly as possible. Success on the team level is bonus to a kid like this who's always been in the spotlight and is expected to be the next big thing. He wants to play for Raymond who's why these guys keep flocking here. All he had to do was watch the first two days of every draft since he got here. This year two more corners will go in the top 3 rounds, following the two first round picks from last year in Adams and white. Surtain has been coached by his dad his whole life...why Bama thought that would work is beyond me.

He has always done that bc he knows the threat that LSU poses to his program at bama.

Well we haven't beaten them in 6 years so I am not sure how much of threat we are perceived as anymore.

Dandy Don says that Saban wanted SR. because he was a great pro and a good coach, not because he wanted his son. Also said it was perfectly within the rules to hire the Dad.

Brown had significant ties to LSU, both familial as well as coaching for track and football.

I desperately hope Surtain signs with LSU, but I have no illusions that he’s a lock. He could have signed in December and didn’t.
