Best kickoff man I can remember, based upon his performance against Miami. Currently no scholarship. Orgeron said that will change when one opens up.

Dude is a punter too. Strong frame at 6'1 210.

Nice. Not sure how the scholarship rules work but IF one of troublemakers ultimately gets booted from the team, this is the first guy I’d pick to put on scholly.

Dat Dude was wearing his "Atomic Boots", booming every kick as though he wanted to bust the dayumd ball.
One time he kicked off and the ball sailed through the uprights, like the equivalent to a 65-70 yard FG.
We were ecstatic with his booming kickoffs.......Miami seemed stymied with his non-returnable kicks. It was a great part of our success.
Thank you Avery Atkins!!

How many kickers do we have total? Is Culp still there? If so why?

It doesn't work like that. He'll either get a scholarship sometime after January (possibly as late as next summer), in which case he'll count against our 2019 signing limit. This is a highly unlikely scenario.
More realistically, he gets a scholarship in 2020, in which case he won't count against a particular recruiting class. The only caveat is we'll need to be under our total team limit of 85. In this scenario, it would be possible for him to take the scholarship of a knucklehead (but a future knucklehead not a current one). The rule with giving walkons a scholarship is that they have to be enrolled for at least two years for them to not count against a signing class.

Since this would be the first time receiving financial aid, he can't get one this semester because we have already used up our allotment of 25. He can get one in the spring, but he would count against next years 25. The earliest he could get a scholarship without counting against the 25 is fall 2020. If we don't sign 25 this year, my guess is they would give him one. But if we have a great year, a lot of studs may want in and it will be hard to give him one.

Why not? He's already counted as an initial counter and we had 4 unused scholarships this year.
Maybe he's a lost cause. But, maybe with a year with no pressure and with McMahon working with him, he can be serviceable next year.
Either way, it doesn't hurt to keep him around at least through this season to see if he can be salvaged. It's possible we will need to free up some scholarships to sign a full class, however, so I would assume they make a decision on him sometime next spring.

Beats the hell out of Cameron Gamble. He was on full scholarship all 4 years and I don't ever remember him kicking it in the end zone.

Atkins was also an all state safety in a high classification in HS. He loves to hit even when he can go after the kick returner. Why he walked on to LSU is a mystery!

To be fair, I don’t think it was all due to lack of ability on Gamble’s part.

Nice find on the highlight clip. VERY GLAD to have AA on the team. A real “bargain” as a walk-on. I don’t want to find us in a situation where the K needs to make the play to stop a return, but good to know he is a headhunter if needed.

I am not sure it works the same as it did when my son played D1 Baseball a few years ago. He was on a full ride academically, and was therefore technically a full walk on,,, but totally full based on HS grades and ACT/SAT scores.
Not sure if this still applies now but from seeing Avery's HS grades and ACT score I am sure he would qualify.
Regardless a GREAT PICK UP!!

You are right, a lot of people don't realize that a lot of those short kickoffs by Gamble was requested by the special teams people or analysts that they had back then so as to work on the covering and tackling issues that they were having back then. He had a strong enough leg to make endzone kicks, but he also kicked some out of bounds which drove you crazy, just really inconsistent in his career.

He is a very physical player who makes plays in the open field. Seems skilled enough there to play in college.

I was at the game and watching the kickers warm up. Atkins was kicking near the sidelines from the 35 yardline to several Tigers standing in the endzone at the other end of the field. They hardly moved. They just stood there while Atkins kicked one after another right into their hands. It waa like he was passing 70 yards accurately to a receiver.
This kid has talent. No one is going to kick field goals other than Cole Tracy with his ability, however it looks to me that Atkins is a great backup if Cole is injured.
Also Atkins as a punter can punt rugby style, which may come in useful at times.
It is amazing that he came to LSU as a walk-on when he was offered scholarships from other schools including Harvard!

Scholarship incoming. He’s going to be an LSU folk hero by the time he leaves LSU.
