Attrition since 2019.

If my research is correct, we have 11 scholarship players left from the 2019 Championship team. Even with guys leaving early for the draft, that number is staggering. Here is what I see. Let me know if I left anyone out.
2017 Class
Todd Harris (6th yr senior)
2018 Class
Jaray Jenkins
Cam Wire
Micah Baskerville
2019 Class
John Emery
Anthony Bradford
Kardell Thomas
Charles Turner
Raydarious Jones
Desmond Little
Jay Ward
Number of players left in each class:
2017 Class - 1 of 27
2018 Class - 3 of 25
2019 Class - 7 of 25
2020 Class - 9 of 25
2021 Class - 20 of 25
2022 Class - 31 of 31
If you have concerns about depth this year, look no further than the classes of 2019 and 2020. We have 16 of 50 kids remaining from those two classes (4 kids from 2019 went pro last year. 2 kids from 2020, Shanahan and Evans, finished their eligibility).
Edit: I should add that the 2022 class is obviously not all freshman. There are several upperclassmen from the portal in this class.

It’s no concern with depth we are two deep at every position with some starter experience or playing time of some sort

With the portal and no limits on numbers this signing class (and next?) this should get rectified very quickly, if not already.

Good post, boss. This illustrates a lot of our problems from the past two years.

Attrition has been an issue, but why add 17 & 18 classes. Even with Covid I don’t think there are a bunch of teams with a ton of 5th and 6th year seniors running around.
By all means most if not all 17 &18 players should be gone. Unless you needed to come back to prove it(covid) or had hardship with injuries.

2017 and 2018 isn't that surprising. Those are would be 5th and 6th year seniors. So a lot could either make it in football or move on. The 2019 and 2020 classes retaining roughly 32% is pretty rough. Tough to recover in all honesty. Hopefully the transfer portal has worked it like we think it has in our favor on this.

Orgeron really messed up with the 2019/2020 class. Those are killing us right now.

It's not really a big deal, this is the new norm. We will have players winning games for us that were part of other teams classes. Eight of our starters this year signed with other schools. The thing that was killing us the most the last few years were out of shape players that could barely get in a three point stance.

No doubt.
'20 class in particular was really highly rated too at #4 by On3, and it has turned into a real dog.
Lost the 2 highest rated guys in the class (Gilbert and Ricks).
Also lost Toles, Webb, Tre Bradford, Sampah, Josh White, Eric Taylor, McGlothern, Max Johnson, Koy Moore, Alex Adams, and TJ Finley.

I was just sharing the numbers from 2017 and 2018 to show what was left of those classes. Those numbers are not unusual. I wasn't trying to blame those classes for attrition.

If you remove those players and the transfers we got then the class would be ranked at 28.
That’s rough. I hope our fan base understands that it’s gonna take Kelly a few years to really turn this thing around. Hopefully we can be patient while he does.

It’s not a new problem but it really kicked into gear (IMO) with the 2018 class.
I recall creating a thread after the 2020 season that looked at the 247 composite “team talent” scores by class. What I found at the time was that LSU had (relative to our SEC peers) a gaping hole in our junior class - the 2018 class at the time. I think 2018 was really a turning point that led to both Orgeron’s peak and his downfall.
We took 3 JUCO’s and 2 grad transfers in 2018:
- Travez Moore
- Badara Traore
- Damien Lewis
- Joe Burrow
- Cole Tracy
Lewis, Burrow, and Tracy obviously worked out. But this was before the transfer portal and one-time transfer eligibility exception so only taking 19 entering freshmen put us in a hole to begin with. Of those 19, 11 eventually transferred out. Of the 8 that stayed, the two best (Chase and Marshall) had both left the team by the end of the 2020 season.
So at the end of 2020 we had 6 recruits from the 2018 class left on the roster. Compare that to your numbers now and it actually looks like we have less attrition (9 remaining from the 2020 class and 7 from the 2019 class). It’s honestly a bit surprising to me considering everything that’s happened since 2020.
I do think we are in a different world now with the one time transfer exception, though. We definitely need to improve our evaluations (particularly with regards to character - we need less guys getting dismissed/suspended indefinitely). But there’s going to be attrition no matter what. As long as the NCAA continues to let us replace some of our transfer losses above the 25 cap, I like the strategy of going after a few high-character upperclassmen who have proven themselves elsewhere.

For this season we’re not gonna be very far away from what other sec rosters have in regards to numbers. The portal has hurt a lot of teams and we’re in the mid 70s as far as number of scholarship players.
Other coaches have said they have about the same amount. If it wasn’t a widespread issue then they never would have removed the 25 limit per class

There will always be SOME attrition, but the recent rates of attrition have been concerning.
I have no doubt the excessive attrition will be cleaned up by this staff.

Todd Harris. I have no idea how much he'll play this year, but I'd like to see him finish his career on a high note. I also hope he's taken advantage of the educational opportunities he's had with being a 6th year player.

Orgeron is the John DeLorean of Football Coaches. Find the stupidest reasons to kill something good.

Been here so long it seems like he was in the same class as Kevin Faulk. Mist be approaching 40 by now.

It is strange to think Todd Harris was in the same class as Grant Deloitte and ranked about the same coming out of high school, at least according to some services.
