Air Force stud, Paul Skenes, two way player in the portal.

According to Kendall Rogers 15 minutes ago. He had a 2.73 in 15 starts and hit .314 with 13 HR's.
Get used to seeing this stuff with the transfer portal. Good players on mid-major teams moving to big schools. I think we'll see a lot of this.

There’s a baseball recruiting thread on the RB. Let’s not make a post every time a kid enters the portal.

Interesting seeing that from a service academy player. Is he a grad transfer?

You're right. My mistake. If it's possible for someone to move this to the recruiting board, please do.

You can leave the AFA after two years. Athletes there lead a rough life, they basically have to follow an engineering curriculum plus military stuff, plus being an athlete. I don’t know how they do it. I had a friend play baseball there and I interviewed Troy Calhoun for a special, talking with them I don’t know how they get any athletes to commit. Those kids have to really love the academy to stick it out. Beautiful campus and a great place to go to highschool.

I thought to get to AFA you have to serve. Unless you fail.

I think they have to sign the military contract before junior or senior year

Probably got shown the door. It probably has to do with academics or not conforming to military standards. You just cannot leave the service. It is a contract.

You can leave free and clear up until the end of your second year. At the end of your second year you owe 2 years. At the end of your third year you owe 3 years. At the end of your fourth year you owe 5 years unless you go into a handful of specialized fields then it could be more than 5 years. If you leave early, your service requirement can be deferred so that you can finish your degree but you still have to serve them eventually.
I left AF in the middle of my junior year, finished my degree the next 2 years then spent 2 years in Ft Walton beach. Good times.
ETA even if you are “shown the door” for academic or behavioral performance you still owe the commitments listed above. Also, the athletes get a LOT of help and special treatment. They still have to make the grades and meet the military minimums but the help available to them is significant.

I played there and graduated from there and am very much in touch with the group. These posts are misleading. He is an absolute stand up person with no issues whatsoever. The guy is a 1st rounder and if he stays, it can get very gray on how the process works to get drafted. They often change the rules since the primary reason you go there is to serve. He knows how much he is worth, so he is making a clean break to chase that dream. He could follow the path of Griffin Jax (Twins) but its a bigger gamble if he wants to play ball.
And help available to them is not significant. You spend every free minute studying and requesting extra time to study with the professors. Nothing is handed out.

He got screwed. He was all set to be able to forego the active duty part and then the rule was changed.
From what I understand, Skenes is making a baseball decision. He doesn't have the active duty component if he leaves now, but would if he stayed. It's unfortunate it has to work this way and even more unfortunate that there are idiots in this thread that would rather demean the kid than take two seconds to learn the truth.

Exactly. Thank you. First post that actually knows whats going on.

Skenes played in Alex Box as a freshman and got a couple hits, struck out a few guys. Played on Team USA with Dylan Crews. I haven't seen where we are connected to him in anyway so I'd be pretty surprised right now if he came to LSU.
Griffin Jax ended up being able to train with the olympic team last year under a USO type exemption, so he didn't have to stay out of baseball too long, but he had a lot of development time taken from him due to the rule change. Mitch Harris was another guy that was affected by that, but he was from Navy.

Projected top 15 pick next year. Would be a huge get
Posted on 6/8/22 at 7:01 pm to ProjectP2294
Berry and Crews both played with Skenes. I think he would be a huge get, help solve several issues with 1 guy. Catcher that can hit from the right side, plenty of experience, leadership, and a pitcher that can extend with Friday night stuff. I envision him pitching 1 game a weekend, catching 1, and DH'ing or at least PH'ing in 1. I think he can play 1B, too, which may allow you to kick the tires with Morgan in the OF if he's healthy.
May be a pipe dream, but let's dream.

I played at USAFA as well... rule is... you owe time once you commit to coming back to school and starting your junior year.
You are free and clear to leave all the way through your sophomore year/third degree year.
Perks for athletes wash out as you sometimes get treated like $hit by those who aren’t athletes... especially your first year.
Good luck to Skenes... I’d be doing the same if I were him.
