I don't know if I should be on the help board for this but I'd probably get a quicker response here.

I am having an argument (now a bet) with my boss on whether or not a recruit can play football on an athletic scholarship other than football.

I say no but after considerable searching, can't seem to find proof. I'm hoping someone here can provide me a provable link. Thanks

Nope. If you play football, the scholarship comes from football, regardless if the kid plays other sports.

This may help a bit.

While it doesn't provide the statement "2 sport atheletes must use a football scholarship" it does say it indirectly.
quote:

By NCAA rule, an athlete on track scholarship can’t play football his first two years on campus. To do so any sooner, he’d have to give up the track scholarship.

There wasn't a section for scholarships from what I could tell in that manual.

Thanks for the links. I will scour the site in hopes of an answer.

You can find it by simply searching for football, but that would take awhile. You can narrow it down and speed it up by thinking about which article a scholarship might be discussed.

It's the Bear Bryant rule.

This is the key. The scholarship section of the manual is section 15 "Financial Aid". The exact bylaw is 15.5.9.1 which states that participation in football forces the student-athlete to count as a football scholarship recipient.

Like stated above, this is sometimes referred to as the Bear Bryant rule because the Bear was giving football players "other sport" scholarships in order to circumvent the 85 maximum scholarship limit for football.

A student may receive other financial aid, not athletically related, and participate in football without counting against the 85 limit.

Jamie Howard played college football after signing with the Braves. I'll make a call to see if he counted toward the football scholarship number or not. For some reason, I was under the impression he paid his own tuition.

Rules have changed since then with the NCAA and MBL for sure.

But I have no clue wether or no Trindon counts toward a full football scholly or track or half n half.

jamie howard did not count as a football schollie.. even though he did in fact sign a grant in aid..

once you sign a professional contract in any sport - you cannot compete in THAT sport in college any longer -

once you sign a pro contract in any sport - you cannot recieve a grant in aid - in any other sport....

if you play football and are on ANY grant in aid - it must be from football - although YOU CAN PLAY other sports.....

and yes it is the bear bryant rule....

Bear loaded the golf, swim and baseball teams with football players - actually made the bama baseball team pretty good back in the day - first SEC school to make it to the national title game in baseball..

Current rules for professional athletes:
quote:

15.3.1.4 Institutional Financial Aid to Professional Athlete. It is permissible to award institutional financial aid to a student-athlete who is under contract to or currently receiving compensation from a professional sports organization in the same sport, provided the student-athlete has completed his or her four seasons of competition, the student-athlete receives no more than five years of unearned aid and such aid is received within six years after initial collegiate enrollment. A professional athlete in one sport may represent a member institution in a different sport and may receive institutional financial assistance in the second sport. (Revised: 8/11/98, 4/26/01, 4/27/06 effective 8/1/06)

15.3.1.4.1 Exception for Former Professional Athlete in the Same Sport. A former professional
athlete may receive institutional financial aid in the same sport, provided the following conditions are met: (Revised: 4/27/06 effective 8/1/06)

(a) The student-athlete no longer is involved in professional athletics;

(b) The student-athlete is not receiving any remuneration from a professional sports organization; and

(c) The student-athlete has no active contractual relationship with any professional athletics team, although the student-athlete may remain bound by an option clause [a clause in the contract that requires assignment to a particular team if the student-athlete’s professional athletics career is resumed, as opposed to a clause that suspends the contractual relationship only for a specified period of time (e.g., during the academic year while the professional athletics team is not competing) and permits the contractual relationship to be reinstated by the student-athlete or the professional athletics team or organization]. (Revised: 2/16/00)

The Cubs paid the first 3 years for Mauck. I'm pretty sure he was on scholarship his last year though.
