Official "Where/How to Watch The LSU Game" Thread
if the bars in Gainesville haven't switched since last year's baseball playoffs, most of them do not get CST. the Beer Pit, which is on University Ave. near The Swamp Restaurant, had it last year. i believe Gainesville Ale House, on Archer just east of I-75, has it, too.

eta: Beer Pit gets Cox but not CST. Ale House has switched to satellite. welcome to hell!

thank you for your help! I'm covering the regional over here for the weekend and don't know a thing about the area. If you hear of anything, please update your post. I'll be checking frequently! Haha. Thanks again for your help!

Where to watch in Gainesville?

Cox has service out here, so I'm assuming there will be somewhere to watch the game, but I'm hoping anyone familiar with the area could help out.

I am having an argument (now a bet) with my boss on whether or not a recruit can play football on an athletic scholarship other than football.

This is the key. The scholarship section of the manual is section 15 "Financial Aid". The exact bylaw is 15.5.9.1 which states that participation in football forces the student-athlete to count as a football scholarship recipient.

Like stated above, this is sometimes referred to as the Bear Bryant rule because the Bear was giving football players "other sport" scholarships in order to circumvent the 85 maximum scholarship limit for football.

A student may receive other financial aid, not athletically related, and participate in football without counting against the 85 limit.
From the top. The base rule for all intercollegiate sports is that a student-athlete (SA) has a 5 year time limit to compete in 4 of those years.

A "Medical Hardship" is applied for through the conference office and as long as the SA meets the criteria, the conference office will grant a medical hardship waiver. This waiver allows a SA that has competed during the season to be able to not count the season as one of the 4 competition years (again, as long as the criteria is met).

To apply for a "sixth year" (ala Charles Alexander), the school has to apply through the NCAA to have the 5 year limit extended due to circumstances beyond the SA's control. This is why it most likely occurs when a SA has two separate seasons that he meets the criteria of the "med hardship waiver."

The NCAA looks at a normal redshirt year as within the SA's control, so this fact does not help in the argument of getting an extension beyond the 5 year limit.
Kelly is going to face the toughest part of his job with the remainder of the schedule. I think Oregon drops a game down the stretch. We just have to worry about what we can control. If we win out, I still think we make it to the promised land...IF we win out!
Is it available? If so can you post the link. Thanks in advance.

I agree with you.

And, your answer surprised me.

Thanks for responding to it.

Well, I was hoping that I would be able to have some decent discussion on the topic. I know it is difficult to do on these blogs sometimes (see 2nd post on topic), but I was just trying to see what others thought about it.

Thank YOU for your genuine acknowledgment.
chipper,
just curious, do you agree with how it was handled? Or do you simply not care about this situation at all?

Since you seem to be upset at the fact that Mr. Ryan left the decision to the students, would you have liked for him to show the leadership that you say he lacks and decided on his own to cut out the Athletic Department?

Honestly, YES! If, after his complete analysis, he decided that cutting athletics would be best for the university. I would feel much better about him if that was the case, but he just decided to turn over the continuance of an entire department over to students. I just think that a decision like this should be made by the chancellor.

UNO Athletic Department may be cut

Posted by giolsutiger on 5/1/09 at 8:14 pm
With the students voting down the athletic fee increase, UNO athletics may not be able to survive with the iminent cuts to higher education across the state.

What are all of your thoughts on this situation?

My opinion: I think UNO's Chancellor, Tim Ryan, is a gutless coward that should resign from his position and stay away from all other positions of power! Newsflash, Tim, you were hired into a position of power, and paid accordingly, to make tough decisions. All he has done in this situation is pass the buck. He has not taken any leadership, and now the entire UNO community will suffer. He could have gone to the LSU board and proposed the athletic fee increase without the vote (which was done in 2001) and saved the department, but he doesn't want to take any responsibility for anything that happens. He just wants to avoid controversy at all costs. This is the worst type of person anyone can have in a leadership role--someone that hides and refuses to stand up! Anyway, I understand everyone is going through hard economic times right now, but for the leader of a university to turn over ANY department's existance over to 18-22 year old kids that have a difficult time analyzing long-term effects is truly dispicable. The students voted thinking only about the immediate impact to their wallet. I don't blame them, especially in these economic times. I blame the lack of leadership.

That falls squarely on the shoulders of you Ms. Ryan - you obviously do not have the testicular fortitude to be called "Mr."

I do, however, want to apologize to the ladies out there that I insulted by associating Tim Ryan with your gender.

The 35 man roster is actually due the day before the first contest. In LSU's case, it would be February 19th

re: MINGO UCONN visit update

you should go take a pic of the "Mingo" ice. pretty sure that would be a violation on UCONN's part for "personalizing" something for a prospect while on an official visit.

If he signed a LOI as an early enrollee wouldn't all this be a moot point anyways?

He could not have signed a LOI. HS prospects cannot sign until February.

One thing he could do was sign scholarship papers for LSU, but the scholarship papers are contingent on certification from the Eligibility Center, which supposedly Pratt has not yet received. :usa:

The restrictions of the NCAA apply to Enrolled Student-athletes (Shep come January) if the student is INSTRUCTED TO MAKE THE CALL BY THE COACHING STAFF.

You tell me how that would be proven.

early signing as in letting them sign a paper early or as in enrolling early?

As in being able to sign an NLI during an early signing period (prior to the regular signing period beginning in February).
