JJ McCarthy was a 5* QB coming out of IMG Academy.
JJ McCarthy won a National Championship in his final year.
JJ McCarthy was developed by Jim Harbaugh and staff.

Jayden Daniels was a 4* QB coming out of Cajon HS.
Jayden Daniels went to the SECCG in his first year at LSU.
Jayden Daniels was developed by Brian Kelly and staff.

JJ McCarthy was selected with the 10th pick and signed a contract for $21.85 million including a $12.71 million signing bonus.

Jayden Daniels was selected with the 2nd pick and signed a contract for $37.75 million including a $24.27 million signing bonus.

The discrepancy will grow even larger when they sign their second contracts.

JJ McCarthy started out with a better rating from a better HS. His college team won a national championship under a former and current NFL coach. And yet Jayden Daniels' contract is almost double JJ McCarthy's contract.

Underwood and his family are intelligent people. They are not thinking short term. They are not foolish. Even if Michigan offered millions more than LSU, they are not going to throw away the long term gain.

You make a lot of good points, and also tie it in well to Underwood’s situation.

I will say though, Jayden Daniels was practically a 5*. I think he was right on the cusp, and was also rated as the best or second best dual threat in the country. San Bernardino was a pretty good football program, at least when he went to school, and All the scouts gushed about Daniels out of HS, and knew he would start Day 1 at Arizona State. It’s no coincidence JD tore it up his freshman season when he actually had some NFL guys. Aiyuk, and Rachad White.

Might want to add that JD5 won a heisman, broke NCAA records, and had the #1 offense in all of college football
Compare his stats to McCarthy…

247 had them both as 4 stars with a 97 rating coming out of high school. JD was the #1 DT QB and a national ranking of 35. McCarthy was the #6 QB and national ranking of 38.

McCarthy won a Big Ten championship in his 2nd year and 1st as a starter then a national championship in his 3rd year and 2nd year starter at 20 years old. Beat OSU both years as a starter.

27-1 as a starter highest winning % in D1 history.
National Championship
Rose bowl MVP
Big Ten QB of the year
1st team all Big Ten

Top 10 NFL draft pick after only 2 years as a starter.

Thats a better explanation of his career at Michigan and only Michigan.

That's kind of the WHOLE point.

Coming out of high school, McCarthy had all of the advantages.

McCarthy's choice to get developed at Michigan, and Daniel's choice to get developed at LSU ,made all of the difference..

Wholly crap! That's impressive. That's probably the BEST a Michigan QB can do.

And even with all of that on McCarthy's college resume, Daniels doubled his rookie contract.

Two years under Kelly and staff and Daniels wins the Heisman and sets offensive records. Even with the best Michigan coaching and winning a National Championship, McCarthy could NOT touch Daniels' stats.

So why would any QB choose Michigan over LSU?

Thank you.

Thank you for making my point.

Daniels got a gigantic contract because of his performance after being developed by Kelly and staff.

Daniels got a gigantic contract because of his performance in LSU's offense.

Michigan's offense does not permit a QB to put up those kind of numbers..

Truthfully, jayden is just more talented than mccarthy. Underwood’s talent will prob net him a top qb drafted status regardless where he goes

10.5 million dollars and not having to live in BR.

I did a little research into this too a week or two ago and saw that JJ McCarthy avg'd about 198 ypg passing and 12 ypg rushing... in a NC offense. Not eye popping. Just game manager stats.

Managed to beat OSU both years as a starter. 2 big ten titles, 2 playoff appearances (only 4 teams) and a national championship.

Truthfully, Jayden blossomed under Kelly and Staff's tutelage.

He was a very different player when he left LSU.

There's no getting around the simple but undeniable fact that his development at LSU made him tens of millions of dollars on his rookie contract.

The study doesn't address the fact that the offensive staff at LSU that revitalized and developed Daniels which we all witnessed is still in place. The present offensive staff at Michigan doesn't have an identity established and most certainly doesn't have a QB coach like Sloan.
