Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas three-star tight end Mason Taylor is headed to LSU. The youngest son of NFL legend Jason Taylor announced a verbal commitment to the Tigers on Thursday picking the four-time national champions over schools like Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M, Pittsburgh, FSU and Miami.

"It's just the whole program and the history of them winning," Taylor told 247Sports over the phone when asked about the decision."The coaching staff is also on me 24/7. I love the fans and the campus. I love the atmosphere and the stadium. It's just a great all around school and it feels like the place to be for the next few years." Taylor actually informed LSU's staff of his intentions on Tuesday night. It's safe to say that the news caught Ed Orgeron a bit by surprise.

quote:

I called Coach [Derek] Shay and Coach O on FaceTime. Coach O had actually just got back from vacation. He was in the car coming back from Cancun. That's when I told him, and he was just going crazy in saying that it was the best birthday present. It was a cool experience," Taylor said.

quote:

They want to use me either off the hip or in the slot," Taylor explained. "They said that I will have a chance to play early because I think they only have three scholarship tight ends and then when me and Jake get there, it might only be four. I'm excited."

His genes are strong AF.

Is being a TE with a DE dad and LB uncle a football family rebel phase?

This is pretty cool as an LSU and Dolphins fan. Can’t wait to see JT and Zach wearing purple and gold in Tiger Stadium.

Really, Really , good raising by family on this young man .We will all grow to love this kid. I can already invision flags flying for Horns down and Gator Chomps directed to players after scoring his 3rd TD on said schools. This young man is very confident, not Cocky. And really just now developing his skill as TE. He has tinkered with other positions, but now a full Geaux. @ TE. Doesn’t hurt having National TV pointed at absolute stud NFL family members decked out in P & G. Think Moss. It’s the kind of advertising that can’t be bought, it’s real.

Hopefully we talking about another great committing tomorrow.

And who knows what may happen This weekend.

Isn't The Herd's Joy Taylor related to Jason?

Really nice addition and filled the need of 2 TE's in this class.

I can see why Peetz and Company liked him. Good fit for how LSU will use TE's.

Can see him easily growing into a 6-4 245 TE that can stretch the field.

Didn’t think we necessarily needed two TE’s this class but I love the bloodlines and the makeup. Two stud TE’s on the field at the same time could probably create some mismatches. Geaux Tigers

I am not pointing the finger at anyone saying we really don’t need 2 TE. I can totally understand it’s not the most glamorous position. The problem for Peetz is his full offensive scheme requires both blocking and catching from that position. No offense to the young guys trying to learn a new scheme, but just being honest, only 1 is proving to really demonstrate he can do both. Well heaven forbid but injury or just fatigue happens and we can’t run our ENTIRE OFFENSE then. Hope y’all understand what I m trying to get at . It’s not that we don’t have a few really talented guys trying, just difficult position in this offense to master.

This is LSU's TE depth chart this season.

1. Kole Taylor
2. Nick Storz

That's it.

I don't consider Bech a true TE. He's a hybrid.

2 TE's were clearly necessary in this class.
