Look at the dates. That's kind of early to be the last visit. He has at least Tennessee and Florida visits after us.

normally, i absolutely agree with you here...
but Royal is that good... the comparisons are very warranted

LSU has been putting the work in to earn this OV.
The fact that we had to put in so much work to earn an official visit with a kid from Brother Martin is a lasting testament to just how much damage the last staff caused. It’s in our backyard for crying out loud.

quote]The catch he made last year against Karr was one of the most impressive catches I’ve ever seen from a high school receiver[/quote]
This must be it at the 29:13 mark. It’s incredible:
Side note: I don’t see how scouts do it. Royal does not stand out until that catch late in the game.
Brother Martin’s offense is unbearable to watch. They seemingly only threw maybe 15 times this whole game. They have the worst QB and ground game and yet only threw towards their HS all-American Royal twice in the first half (one overthrow/one drop). At the beginning of the 3rd quarter, Royal does catch a wide open TD but it was on a busted play. Sure, he makes that incredible TD catch in the 4th quarter , but if I’m a scout watching Royal for the first time, how do I judge that it wasn’t just a fluke catch? He only caught two passes, albeit both for TDs, but one was a busted coverage, the other could be viewed as lucky.
Highlight reels/compilation catches have to be mandatory for any scout and yet highlight reels don’t tell the whole story as a player has to be seen in person, not only for size, but for in-between non-highlight plays. And with thousands of prospects, finding/discovering an All-American buried in a sad offense seems like an impossible job for a scout.

Lets you know that he’s not afraid and is able to block. Also shows you his route running ability, speed coming out of breaks, etc.
In that type of offense, the only ways to really judge his hands, high point ability and strength at the point of catch are in 7 v 7 or camp situations

I am sick and tired of these "committed" players looking at other programs!
Commitment means nothing to these kids.
Committed players need to stay committed!
Except when it benefits us, right?
Although, part of me agrees with the sentiment

Ahh, yes. I can see now how a gem on a sad team can slip through the cracks if he also can't afford to attend a camp/7v7.

"Lucky?" I don't think that word means what you think it means.

which makes "official" visits actually harder to secure... being the recruit is so close they can just come down for unofficial visits as often as they want... they only have a certain number of official visits, so you typically see them use those for schools further away, and utilizing "unofficial" visits for in-state schools, even closer out of state schools

Most of those sad offenses don’t have All-Americans (obviously) so it’s not something that anyone expects

The scouts watch more than one game against Karr. Go watch some of his other games on YouTube, it’s easy to see he’s special, he had 1400 rec yds and 19 tds last season.

in an extremely run heavy offense, where every single person in the stadium knows if it's a pass play, they are going to Royal with the ball....
in that context, those are INSANE numbers....

What makes this kid so highly sought after? I have not seen film but I know he has track speed. His size is average. Does he have extraordinary ball catching skills? Also, where does he project? outside WR1 or Slot?
This is not a criticism at all. I was just wondering what sets him apart from the field. Usually guys rated this high are physical freaks or something.
TIA

He has elite speed, elite hands, elite physicality. He played in the UA AA game as a JR and looked like the best WR out there. He made another absurd one handed catch in the game
That’s like looking at Ja’Maar Chase coming out of HS and wishing what makes him good. When you see him play you’re like “oh, I get it”

Thanks! I really appreciate that info. I follow recruiting and am well aware of his ranking and the high level recruiting efforts he is receiving from all the biggies but I had not seen his bonafides talked about much.
