Zircon Studfinders

These gadgets are so frustrating. I tosses a $20 model into the trash today and went out and bought the souped up model. It did not identify studs across areas where I strongly suspected them. So as a last resort I pulled out my trusty stack of rare earth magnets. I have a stack of ten small magnets where I taped I taped the circumference. On one end I also taped a loop of ribbon. I use this stack to find nails in reclaimed lumber. These things work like a charm in finding the drywall screws. Within ten minutes I screwed the antique brackets to the wall and then secured a decorative mesquite shelf. So if you need to find studs with no chance or error, get the magnets.

I use a thermal camera, magnets, measuring off of door/window frames and electrical boxes, or eyeballing off a nail mark in the trim. Never used any stud finder, they are all junk.

I hated stud finders until I started using this (Franklin) With a little common sense, these work great.

was this on an exterior wall? The Zircon's clearly state they aren't powerful enough for exterior walls.

I've never had an issue with my zircon stud finder. I hit the stud every time. I've used it on interior and exterior walls. I've hung TV brackets, pictures, secured cabinets, threaded pipe shelving. Might be an operator error.

I've had a zircon that just did not work.
I have a black and decker that works very, very well.

I've been using a Stanly for years. Never had an issue with it. It finds the stud every time.

Totally agree. They are junk. I have a ryobi one that I bought 15 years ago that works pretty well but wanted to upgrade so I bought the Zircon but the ryobi outperforms it.
