Why are built-in grills drastically more expensive than free standing?

I’m in the planning stages of building an outdoor kitchen. I will pick out a griddle and gas grill then design the counter around these two items.

Looking a gas grills, the built-in are very expensive compared to free standing gas grills. Is there necessarily a benefit to a built-in that’s worth paying the higher price?

Guess they had to pay someone to chop the legs off.

Not sure why they are, but you're right.

I don't have one, so I don't really know. But wouldn't something intended for being built-in be made of better quality due the difficulty of replacing, whereas free-standing grills are considered drag to the road disposable?

Edit: Or it could simply be that people who install built-in generally can afford the higher price tag, so they charge it

My guess is they know people buying a built in one generally have more money to spend because they can already afford to put in an outdoor kitchen.

Fwiw it looks pretty easy to just use a free standing grill and build it in.

That’s my plan. I will shorten the legs of the free standing grill and build my counter with a drop down recess (shelf) to place the free standing grill on.

Can you post pics? Been thinking about doing the same. Are you using lumber or a pre-fab metal frame?

I’m assuming the heat tranfer is different for freestanding vs built in. Freestanding can dissipate heat all around. Depending on the installation, that may not be possible.

I am closing in the side of my porch so the back wall of the outdoor kitchen will be wood studs then sheeted with cement board. The cabinet will be framed with metal studs and enclosed with cement board. Haven’t decided on the veneer yet

Free-standing grills benefit from economies of scale.

This, this, and this. Yeah as another said economies of scale help out some.

Have you looked at the Broilmaster OP? Not sure your price range, its a more expensive grill but its basically the same for both. The benefit is that the size has been the same forever so parts are easy to get

Also, I was going to say to be careful putting in a "custom" grill. Try to get a specific size IMO. Some of these "custom" outdoor grills are made for looks and not to work and when a part is needed in 5 years they no longer make that model anymore and you are SOL.

I googled the built in grill that came with my house and the price was pretty shocking.

Are they when comparing apples to apples? Same brand, same layout?

I have no clue but a quick check on Home depot and the one brand I looked at seemed comparable. But the built ins they sell are all expensive brands for the freestanding models. So a bit higher than I would probably buy for a freestanding. SO maybe it just looks like they are much higher.
