How easy was install? Mine has been sitting in a box for 2 months
If you can crimp wire connectors on the end of wires, it’s pretty easy. I had a coworker install these in separate enclosures with flex conduit but it doesn’t necessarily have to be that intricate either.

What’s the downside to the soft-start?
Cost.
Like Downshift mentioned, it’s not 100% needed for your AC to operate so you can just remove it if it breaks and your AC will work direct across the line.
Having said that, I had one fail and the compressor would still start up without me having removed it. Contacted MicroAir and they had a new one for me in 3 days.

BIL ordered one for his system, which wound up having an integrated contactor on the main board, I could hit the wires, but the board detected the delay and was locking out. I supposed there was a way to make it work and I talked to their tech support and the suggestions also failed, so He wound up going with an inverter outdoor heat pump section. He sold it to a friend for half cost and the guy loves it.

Stuff like that is why I'm not ultra excited about replacing my 30 year old unit this spring. Yes, it is an inefficient dogged out piece. As long as the gas stays in it though I KNOW I can make it run.
