What should I do with a rose bush planted in the 60’s ?

I need to get this thing moved. Think I can transplant it elsewhere or has it had a good run and I should just chop it down?
I’m going to contact the previous homeowner out of courtesy and see if they want it since they planted it when their daughter was born. She is in her 50s now. But I’m 99% certain they don’t want it or can’t take it.
The roses on it are super fragrant fwiw

cut it WAYYYY back, like down to the nub back.
dig it out as best you can and get as much rootball as you can without tearing up your pavers
re=plant in a spot that works and hope for the best

Good thinking, cgrand, especially if you have to transplant now, in the heat. Just be sure not to cut below the graft so that the regrowth is the preferred yellow flower and not the presumed-crappy rootstock. Better yet, wait for cool weather, and transplant the whole thing

You should be able to transplant anytime. Get as much of the root ball as you can. Water really well in the week before hand
ETA: Sounds like a wonderful heirloom. Kudos for recognizing that

You arent getting those roots out without a saw, I can tell you that.
We tried to transplant two about that size and ended up just cutting them down.

It'd be a weird situation if you cut down that rose bush, then the daughter dies tragically.
I'd feel terrible for a long, long time.

Excellent idea. Those folk know how to deal with rose bushes and would likely find a member who would love to have such an old, established bush with a nice back-story to go with it.
