I don’t know what kind of crappy grass I have, but I would like to replace it with Zoysia (in BR area). Can I lay the sod on top of the existing grass after spreading some new soil (what mix?) on top or do I have to dig up the old grass before laying the new sod? It’s a pretty big yard (will need 15 or pallets of new sod), and I will likely be a disaster with a rented sod cutter so just checking for options. Google search shows various opinions about this topic, Thanks for any help.

I was about to start a thread but I can ask the question here. What is typically the cheapest sod to buy? This is a place I will be selling so I’m not really worried about maintenance.

I wouldn’t lay sod on top of your existing grass. First you want to kill off your existing grass with glyphosate, roundup, 2,4D etc.. Then you would want to level with mason sand and then you can lay your sod. It also wouldn’t hurt to mix some top soil in with the mason sand, but not necessary.

You can’t lay new sod on old grass. Must be bare soil. If you lay sod on existing grass, the new sod will die b/c the grass below it will rot and kill the new sod roots

This is probably a good thread for this question... In my backyard I have a little swing just off the lawn, technically in part of the garden. I would like to extend the lawn to the swing, just so its a little more inviting. That area is mostly shaded, but the lawn is St. Aug. If i tear up that part of the garden, and lay down some sod, will it take root and grow even though its mostly shaded?

Depends on the amount of sun light your lawn will get.

Let’s say not as much as most grass wants.

Although St Augustine is the most shade tolerant of the grasses it still requires about 70% sunlight. I gather from your description you likely do not have sufficient sunlight in that area but if the area is not particularly large you can give it a try.
