What can I lay down on muddy areas?

I have this area on the side of my house where grass will not grow. Sunlight can’t reach it. It’s an access area to my back yard, and I would like it to not be just mud. What can I lay on the mud?

If it's a high traffic access area that doesn't see sun and grass won't grow then put either rocks or pavers over it and or pavers with rocks in between.

this is perfect for rye grass, it grows fast in total shade
you can go over it with a little sugar sand to level the low spots first then plant and water, it will be completely covered and growing fast in less than 2 weeks
the side of my house where the boat is looks like what you described and i only need to add a little rye grass seed to it ever 3-4 years in the high traffic spots

I fought this battle for years with different kinds of grasses. Just put landscaping border along the path and fill with river rocks.
