Sorry if this has been posted. I laid 3 pallets if St Aug in my backyard in May and it’s looking good. I have this stuff growing near it and all in my front yard. Worried about it invading my new sod. Anyone know what this is and how to kill it. Also, would prodiamine help prevent it as a pre emergent? TIA

It looks like Virginia Buttonweed. If you have a St. Aug lawn, there is also some Bermuda in that picture as well.

Thoughts and prayers trying to deal with the VBW. shite is a nightmare.

Doveweed. It has small purple flowers. I use Celsius for post-emergent control in this heat.

I had a little stunting after applying MSM 2 weeks ago.

I use MSM in the summer with no issues but I spray in the morning when it’s “cooler”, and take great care not not over spray & mix the right concentration. As Clint said expect some yellowing/stunting of the the St Aug but that’s normal and it will recover, provided you don’t overspray or mix to strong of a solution.

Thanks everyone. I used Celsius to kill all the buttonweed I had. Once it was gone I had no grass which is why I tilled the whole backyard and resodded.

Forgot to answer this. I have Doveweed and dimension or prodiamine is not effective. Specticle pre-emergent is apparently very effective but it’s expensive - $200+ per bottle (spray version). I ran the numbers on cost per application for my lawn and it’s wasn’t bad - so I plan to begin using it going forward (I missed my window this year). You need to apply it by mid-April with a follow up by early August (this was a recommendation to me by Ron Strahan, weed and turf specialist, LSU AgCenter).

I have St. Aug. Between Celsius and MSM what is better to use as a general grassy weed killer before narrowing down to specific weeds? I use the cocktail in the spring but have a number of grassy weeds now.

Also, can these be applied over whole lawn or spot treatments?

I believe the MSM is generally considered somewhat more effective on true grass weeds vs Celsius, and Celsius more effective on broadleafs with a generally a broader spectrum of weed control - ronk can correct this if I’m wrong as I think I’m conveying his comments on this same question.

Both - I use both of them in this manner and have not observed any negative repercussions.

Flip flop them. Celsius is better on grassy weeds. Iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium and thiencarbazone-methyl in Celsius is what does damage on grassy weeds.

My bad - I flipped a coin and it came up tails.
But I won’t forget next time.
