Our water seems to emitting a slightly foul smell and somewhat noticeable taste difference. Home is just 4 years old. Would this be doe to local water company, water heater, or what? Any ideas?

Has to be the water source or the lines providing water to your home.

All the water? Cold side? Hot side? Municipal water supply or well? A water heater with an anode used up can develop a sulphur-like smell (rotten eggs). If municipal you can try calling the utility and see if they will pull a sample but they'll probably just say it's your plumbing that's the problem. Do you have any filtered taps or appliances like the fridge with the same issue? Our city water is full of crud, I have whole-house size filters for the water heaters and kitchen sink plus an additional stage for the filter tap and refrigerator.

Our city water goes through periods where it smells and tastes off due to certain algae in the lake where the water is sourced. It started several years ago, and it happens almost yearly now.

my well water just started to smell a bit as well. Had it tested it’s almost completely pure but they don’t test for aeration anomalies which can cause the water to smell. It’s not the water heater either because the cold water has the odor as well. I’m going to give it a bit and see if it clears up it isn’t hazardous just a little aggravating
If your city water stinks you need to tell them

Our well has developed a Sulphur smell/taste. Rotten eggs is the smell that comes with it. There is a water treatment piece of equipment that you can get to prevent that from happening. It basically aerosolizes your water and the sulphur gas causing the smell/taste is gassed out of the water. It's harmless but foul smelling. The tank is about $1,000 and a neighbor just had it installed and paid around $3,000 or so for the tank + install.

yes that’s about what I was quoted. Understandably I’m going to see if it clears up on its own LOL

So, I checked with the water company and they said several people on our street have reported it. They said this time of year there is a sulfur build up and they flush it out. They did this Monday but still smells. They say they'll look into it further and will let me know if my line needs to be flushed as well.
