Well I’ll start the ball rolling - Speed Queen is hard to beat - when my Whirlpool Cabrio died I replaced it a Speed Queen based on recommendations from this board - I’ve been happy with it. The model I purchased was TR-5, others might suggest different models. When the Whirlpool dryer dies I’ll replace it with a Speed Queen.

Some others on the H&G board also recommended the Maytag Commercial - I came close to buying it.

Yes the ones without the agitator don't clean very well.

The one you want is the TC5 with the "classic clean". The newer "Perfect Wash" system is terrible.

What I got based on board's recommendation. It's a workhorse. Also, you can open the lid and the washer doesn't stop. You just have to put a clothes pin or a magnet on the little flip switch thing on the back of the washer.

The Speed Queen models with the mechanical knobs and agitator are built like your mom's ones from the 1970's.....you know, the ones she still has today.

Wash drum is smaller than the new stuff, but thats the only drawback.

Before buying new.....

Dryer.... very good chance your problem is a broken safety switch on the dryer door. This is a $10 part and very easy DIY, 20 min project. Watch a youtube video.

Washing machine "smell" ... Try putting a couple of cups of bleach in the machine and running it through a cycle. If the smell is really bad, it may take 2 cycles to remove the smell. You may have to use a setting to completely fill the tub.

You can also purchase Speed Queen commercial machines if you're willing to consider used. Laundromats have to rank high on any failed businesses list. I almost purchased a set of used commercial Speed Queens but I was talked into Dexter instead. I haven't been disappointed.
