Glue four 2x2's together. I've seriously considered gluing two 2x4's together.
I did. Laminated them together and ripped down on a table saw. Worked great

Why is that?
The lumber is shipped with tons of preservative in it which makes it wet. Paint or stain won't soak in until it dries out.

Lowes in Gonzales will have some at random times
be prepared to dig though, those things are as crooked as preacher dick
Id glue then rip 2x6. 2x4 will leave you with visable seams unless you rip them to 3" wide

Wouldn't it be too wet to paint?
Not sure about the paint, but when I put in a deck using it, I had to wait a year before putting a water seal on it. Needed to dry out to take the seal. I would imagine the same for paint.

That would make a 3x3"

That's right, and would look nicer on a kitchen table than a big bulky 4x4.

LINK
Home Depot sells untreated Douglas Fir 4x4s. If they're not in stock just order them online and pick them up or have them delivered. There's got to be other lumber yards like Service Lumber, 84 Lumber, or Westside Lumber that sell them.
I assume you're using 4x4s for the table legs and not chair legs right?

No it wouldn't. It would make a 3 x 3-1/2... nominal
Oops, I responded to the wrong post. You ARE correct.

I tried finding some untreated 4x4s in the Baton Rouge area once for a project I was working on and had absolutely no luck. The local lumber stores all told me you had to have them special cut from a lumber yard. If you do by chance happen to locate some in the area please let us know where you found them.

No. 3x3 is right.
A 2x2 is actually 1.5x1.5

I was editing as you guys were posting...I did not read thoroughly.
My bad. AND you better look carefully at the "actual"..Those are often incorrect these days.

Yeah, I thought he was suggesting you cannot paint treated lumber whatsoever, which is obviously wrong. I understand he may not have the time to let it dry, but it can be painted.

youre best bet is to find an actual lumber yard as some others have said. I make a good bit of stuff with untreated 4x4s that I buy from a local lumber company here in Jackson. The only ones I've seen in lowes have been cedar, I believe.
Also as others have said they are always bowed. Try to find the straightest ones you can find, and try to not buy any with the heart of the tree dead center because those usually bend worse than others.

Try the businesses that sell the big expensive cedar playground equipment. Western Red Ceder isnt treated and already kiln dried. They have 4x4s.

Glue two 2x4s together and then pass every side thru a planer or table saw and you'll end with about 3x3 why in my experience is perfect for a table.and if you do it right, you'll never be able to tell it was two boards glued together
