Worth it? My yard is out of control with freaking Virginia buttonwood and I can’t possibly do it myself. Looking at TruGreen but are there local BR companies that are reputable?

I’ll tell you once and you probably won’t listen but do not do it.

Find a local guy who your neighbors use and who has good reviews. Don't use TruGreen.

Not even remotely.
I’d never trust a company for weed control or any routine mowing, much less pay them…

You can knock it out.
We’re getting to the time of year where you can spray without fear as temps are cooling.

After the VBW takes a big hit and is looking dead remove the clumps by hand. It pulls up easily.

If you’re left with huge bare spots then you might be able to fill in before winter.

How big of an area are we talking here? I’d love to see a pic.

I got some Celsius and tested a small part of the yard yesterday. Wife is worried I’m going to kill everything but I spot sprayed the areas I saw, which were a lot. Gonna wait a few days to see how it goes. It’s so prevalent that it would take a lot of chemical to get it all.

Anything "environmental friendly " way to kill it off? I've got pets running through the yard too much

The way you describe it, it sounds like “kill everything” means just VBW.

It’s one of those weeds that can easily choke out turf grass once established.

So, do you actually have any grass left?

I pulled up three clumps of VBW today. Those are now bare spots. The buttonweed totally choked out my St. Aug in those areas.

I’m doing what I can to pull up chunks of buttonwood but it leaves many bare dirt spots. It’s nuts how bad it’s gotten.

I used to use TruGreen and after one of their techs explained to me that they are using the same fertilizers they would use in let's say New York, Minnesota, etc. I stopped. I started doing it myself with the Scotts program for southern yards and my lawn (Geo Zoysia) has never looked better.

It’s going to take longer than few days….Celsius is an excellent herbicide but it is a systematic herbicide that takes a few weeks to show results, and this time of the year you are dealing with mature VBW that’s going to take multiple sprays, as it’s always more difficult to kill a mature weed than an immature weed. I also might suggest switching to Fertilome Weed Free Zone herbicide (add surfactant) as temperatures cool a bit more.

You’ll have much better success getting it under control if you spray it when it emerges in April/May and it is immature, and sustain treatment (sprays) as it doesn’t emerge all at one time. Learn how recognize when it first emerges - once it develops white flowers it’s mature and far more difficult to control.

There is no silver bullet - even if you hire someone to do it for you - you have to be patient and persistent. You’ll likely do a far better job than a lawn service company just by taking advice from those who know on this board.

Awhile back I used Trugreen for like 3 years in a row and truthfully my yard looked real good. My problem was the price. I have 2 acres but they only did one acre (main yard) and it was like $350 and they were there all of 15-20 min on their fast little machines. I have all Bermuda so it’s easy for me to do it. RoundUp for pre-emergent in late Winter then Celsius for post-emergent spot treatments as needed. Fertilize as needed.

My neighbor has tru-green. He never has a single weed in his yard, and it's about a half acre lot. I do my own pre-emergent, and I always still get some weeds. So whatever they are spraying on his definitely works.

No, but...

If you want to be lazy and you have a ton of money to incinerate, sure... it's mildly good. It won't tailor it to your soil exactly as they should, they will hound you for years if you leave them, and they don't really make a worthy impact for over a year.

I strongly recommend just being sure you water it properly, have your local co-op test your soil and tell you what type of fertilizer you'll need based on that and the type of grass you want to grow.

Ask your neighbor to show you the paper they leave after treatment. It will list the chemicals.

I used TruGreen for 5 years on my new zyoisa and it was virtually weed free for those years. I switched to EnSec and I've have more weeds than ever. Actually I've made note that even a week or two after EnSec comes out that none of the weeds will turn yellow, so I end up pulling them. Rarely had this issue with Trugreen.

Only reason I quit Trugreen was because of their schedule. They would just show up like at 6:30am on a Saturday unannounced randomly or say they came by during the week (again unannounced) but wouldn't do the back yard because I wasn't home to open the locking gate and then I'd have to call them to come do the back. They were just a pain to deal with but I got results.

Next year I'll try to find a legit local guy.

Sucks...most do......TBH you're going to have to hire and fire a lot of them until you get the right one......and by right one I mean one that actually does their job.
