18 year old washing machine stopped agitating and spinning. I replaced the broken belt and lid latch. It now spins but still doesn't agitate. When I stick a screwdriver down the lid latch it makes a humming noise and looks like the tub starts to spin for a half a second then stops. I have to manually advance the knob so it will go to drain and spin. Could it be the transmission?

Eta: Sorry. Didn't read your OP first. What's the model number?

Probably an issue with the belt. When my brother bought his house the washing machine wasn't spinning. As soon as we took off the back panel I could see that there was a problem with the tensioner. Bent it back into place, put the belt back on, and off it went.

Repair clinic is my go-to for diagnosis and finding replacement part numbers. There prices are typically a little higher than Amazon so I bring the part numbers over there to order them.

Model number will help to diagnosis but you'll definitely need it to order the right parts.

Replace the timer switch with guidance from youtube. Resolved a similar issue I had.

If you are having to manually advance the timer it seems like that may be the culprit?

I wouldn’t be scared of putting a little money into that older machine as the ones made about twenty years ago were pretty good (have a 26 year old Maytag myself and done nothing but new belts).

Seconded. My old repairman, who passed a few years ago, told me they don’t make them like those old ones any more.

At first it wasn't spinning either so I had to replace the belt that was broken. Now it spins but won't agitate.
