We have moved from state to state for years. As others said, get a few quotes. Quotes vary quite a bit.Our last move from Lubbock to Florida was $12k and took 3 weeks to get our stuff. That was a first. We packed and unpacked the house. Most movers will give you packing boxes and materials for free. One thing movers do now is they will put your stuff on a truck with another house if your stuff doesnt fill an 18 wheeler. Day of moving in new home, have a ballpark idea where you want things placed. They will set the beds up and move furniture once. Take note of scratched and missing/broken. You have a year to file a claim. We transported 2 vehicles to Florida via a service instead of the movers. Best of luck.

Homewood is great. Glad to see you picked a good area. And no more private school check if you were having to do that.

We are moving from the Dallas area to Broussard in May (Building a home there). I am looking at options as well.
The last two moves (paid by my employer) were over 15K each. Prefer not to do that if I can avoid it.

Great area to move to. We live in Baton Rouge now and are in the process of buying land in Trussville to build a house on. My wife originally wanted to move to Fairhope or Daphne and live near the bay, but after spending some additional time up in Birmingham, she changed her mind. The continuous hills, creeks, great surrounding towns and all the yellow leaved trees in the Fall changed her mind.
As far as moving, begin the garage sale and Goodwill donations early. The more stuff you move, the more stuff you will have to unpack and find a new place for. Clean out your attic ASAP. Chances are that you really don't need anything up there other than your Christmas decorations.
We moved my wife's parents from Texas to Baton Rouge a few years ago and it was fairly inexpensive to have a company pack and move them. Seems like it was in the $5K range or less. The professional movers have a pretty good system and wrap everything very heavily in plastic stretch wrap. Like someone else said, I'd do the obvious and pack and move anything valuable or sentimental myself.
Good luck and you will be amazed how many Louisiana transplants you meet. Birmingham seems to be a magnet for people from Louisiana. I guess it gets you into nice terrain while staying within a short drive to family back in Louisiana.

I recently used U-pack, 26' trailer, 2000 miles. It was under 6k and I had family & friends help load it (they give you 5 days) and used the U-Haul website to find movers to unload. The only drawback is the wait time to get it delivered, but it would take less time with a shorter distance.

I lived in LA my entire life (27 years total - CENLA growing up and BR for LSU, graduation & starting full time job) before we moved. Wife originally from North Carolina. Her family also in North Carolina. She wanted to be back in NC and I wanted a change of scenery. I got lucky. Internship for 2 years while in college and worked for the company full time for 5-6 years. My employer was willing to let me move and work remotely from home. Started working from home about 18 months before COVID. Another lucky part, visit LA often for work and still get to see family quite often.
No two people's situation is or are the same when it comes to making a move that far. I was very lucky with how mine worked out and I am very thankful.

You’ll be amazed what they fit in the truck.
Had a neighbor with a large house say the movers he hired did not seem to know what they were doing because they were only bringing a single truck. When they finished half the 18 wheeler was still empty.
