Thinking of building a barndominium

Interested and Following. I want to build one as a bachelor pad, with future use as a camp should I ever get married. Small like you said, 1000sf or so. No frills, finish a lot of the work myself.

Wouldn’t even necessarily need to be a barndominium, just a small house on a lot of land.

I’m assuming you mean a pole barn building that’s built out into a house OP? It’s one thing to not be handy, but there other aspect is to be to be the General Contractor it yourself? The main advantage to a pole barn is that the roof and exterior go up first, so you can live in it while it’s built out.

ETA: my father in law built a “farmhouse“ this way 2-3 years ago at their hunting farm. It’s about 1200 sq ft I believe and their cost was about $80,000. It’s 3 bedroom, 2 bath, with a bunk room and half a garage you can fit a Jeep or 4x4 in. But they scraped together supplies, GC’d themselves, etc.

Some Amish guys threw up the pole barn in a weekend though.

Pole barn is a wood frame made with wooden poles. Sometimes the trusses are steel sometimes not.

Other option is a steel frame building which is what most of the commercial buildings that are metal buildings are. Pole barns are generally cheaper but with lumber prices higher it might not be. Look at Muellers metal buildings. That’s what I have. It’s a steel frame and everything is a little heavier duty. If you live in a high wind area or hurricane area the pole barns didn’t do well. Steel frame did better. It all depends on the roll up doors.

I know a guy who builds metal buildings. I’m going to run all of this by him.

Based on the minimal research I’ve done so far, that’s not true.

I think the shell for the metal building that size is around 12k. Probably 10k or so for the concrete.

ETA: A friend of mine did this with a 40 x 60 and the total was around 130k but that included a few extras such as dirt work and custom finish work.

I would be too tempted to put a glass rollup garage door on that living room for more light and ability to open up in great weather.

I’m not fully expecting to get it done for $60k. I’m hoping to keep it under $75k.
