Welcome. Not sure where your location is, but keep in mind tapping into power lines, sewer, water, etc. can get expensive in some states. I know in Colorado it can be around 20k or so depending on the county.

Are you looking to build it on acreage or just not in the city? Have you looked into codes and building restrictions? I say that because you say you aren’t handy and most people that live in the country are somewhat handy.

I’m assuming you don’t care about resale? I certainly get the cheaper option idea and staying debt free. I’d just consider resale to some degree you don’t want to build something super weird/ batchelor pad ish, meet a beautiful lady in 3 years, and then not be able to sell it when you want to move in with her.

I'm a contractor in Iberia parish and I can tell you a barndominium is a good bit cheaper right now. Cost of wood has been sky high but it is starting to come down. Just remember to keep the building basic, the more you try to dress up the exterior the closer you'll get to conventional home cost per sq ft.

OP, take a look at container houses. There are some that are cool looking.

Hopefully a container house is in my future, but they are not exactly a budget build unless the person has some DIY skills.
