Question: Do you ever have problems with possums digging in your garden when you use the fish fertilizer? They love stinky stuff.

I have a heart.

All of my tomato, eggplant, and pepper transplants went in mid March. Bean, cucumber, and okra seeds were sown directly beginning of April. Sunflowers were planted in stages since mid March in order to stagger the growth. Strawberries and blackberries were planted last October.

My okra plants are only about 6 inches tall at the moment. Like the beans and cucumbers, they were stunted because of the unusually cooler April weather. But seem to finally be on the move.

Ordered from Amazon.
Grow More 6061 Sea Grow Flower and Bloom Fertilizer

ETA: I have to add this, cause I’m sure this part of the equation contributed to the effectiveness. In the reviews someone had mentioned that this fertilizer didn’t really have a lot of calcium or magnesium. They recommend using CAL-MAG along with it. I had considered trying that stuff before, so I bought that as well. CAL-MAG has a NPK ration of 2-0-0. So when used together, it was a 6-24-24 ratio.

Looks great

Pillage, have you noticed a bothersome amount of bees in your yard since you got the hive? I'm curious about having them in a backyard setting. I've read some people say you would never know and others say you could.

No pictures because I never remember to bring my phone but every thing is looking better in my garden. The beans I planted last week have already started taking off. I put a second set in the ground today which should hopefully be the last.

Cucumbers are growing like weeds with tons of flowers. I may need to hand pollinate soon though and get creative on how to attract some pollinators. I started marigold from seeds around the perimeter but they have a ways to go before blooming I think (not sure, never tried planting them before).

Thankfully, the first couple of blackberries are starting to turn red. I'm not sure my boys could hold out much longer. They check it hourly when we are playing in the backyard.

They got to eat a couple of blueberries yesterday. Birds have picked over most of the bush which I was ok with. I didn't want them loaded down since I had just moved them back to pots this year. It was a good move because they have a ton of new growth and look so much healthier.

Peppers and tomatoes are loaded with flowers and some small fruit. The wind from the storms a few days ago did a number on some of my peppers so I'll have to stake them a bit now.

Okra is the same as pillage, about 6 inches take but they are starting to thrive in this warmer weather. Same with the watermelon.

I don’t even notice them until I get close to the hive. Occasionally I see a couple flying around the back patio near my potted plants.

I grew shooting stars eggplant last year. If I liked eggplant more I would've grown it again. Everything looks great. I started pruning some of my tomato plants after the weather to thin them out. The indeterminate ones are getting big enough such that the bottom leaves are getting kinda nasty.

This sounds like my 4 year old and 2 year old boys. The 4 year old gets so fired up about "his" garden; he wouldn't eat broccoli until we grew some on our own

It’s in the back corner of the yard. Probably about 75 feet from the back door.

We finally got our garden planted this past weekend.

It's been a very cold spring here and I didn't want to get burned from a freeze like I have been the past few years.

Planted tomatoes, squash and okra right now. Trying to decide what else we want.

I wish you lived closer to me. I would give you some blackberry plants. My Dad gave me some years ago and they have huge berries. Don't know the variety and he is no longer with us, so I cannot ask him.

A couple of photos.

First picture is the blackberry bush from February 6th and the second is today.

Also, my apple trees are pissing me off. They are supposed to cross pollinate to fruit but the larger one flowered then as soon as the flowers died off the smaller one flowered. They are supposed to bloom at the same time. I do have one apple going but I expect it to fall off at some point.

I keep most of my hives at a separate location, but bring others home if they are weak. Right now I have 2 strong hives in my backyard. Like pillage said, you don’t really notice them, especially during a flow. Now. When there is a dearth, they will destroy your hummingbird feed or any sugar based anything that you leave out.

All being said. If you don’t have a hive in your backyard, there is gonna be one somewhere close anyhow.

Idk man, yesterday my boys found a honey bee for the first time this year. We just don’t see any out here.

Does anyone here grow any mushrooms?

I went to a farm yesterday that has racks of old logs where they drill holes and put in a plug of spores. Talked to one of the people who said her sister grows them and she always has a ton of shitakes, reishis (?), oysters, and lions mane. She got tired of messing with it so she threw it in the compost pile. Now the compost pile is exploding with mushrooms.

I think I am going to give it a whirl and see what happens.

I never even thought about that. I definitely wouldn’t mind having a steady supply of portobellos.

Do you have plants that honeybees desire? I use to think they went after any flower or pollen source.

Dayum. I might have to hit mine with the lawnmower.

The large root system from before Laura definitely helps it out. Doesn't hurt that any extra fertilizer in the tank after spraying the garden gets thrown on top of it.

How big do apple trees get?

The ones I got are semi-dwarf. The max the should get is 15'. I got them from Stark Bros and you can go dwarf (max 10'), semi-dwarf, or standard (18'+). On Fast Growing Trees it looks like it just depends on which variety you get.

Yes. There is clover all over the neighborhood. On top of that I've got the blackberry bush, regular garden plants, a small herb garden with onion and lavender, the apple trees, azaleas, and a vitex tree.
