I plan to build a smallish box garden that sits on the ground. Problem is.. the spot I want to put it is gravel, clay dirt. Using 2x12s so will be a foot tall. Does the dirt quality under the box matter or is that foot deep enough?
Nah it won't matter. A foot of good soil depth is plenty for your roots to forage. Over time that rich soil will make the ground underneath very fertile. Every year just make sure to
amend your soil well by adding compost or other organic matter to it.

Tractor supply sells pelletilized lime you can spread like fertilizer.
Need to get something to kill ants. They found the newly rolled garden.
Got the squash, cucumbers, corn, and edamame in. Think the rest will have to wait til after Spring Break.

fire ants. really would prefer not to get lit up.

how much edamame did you plant?
Posted on 3/16/21 at 7:52 am to LSUlefty
one seed packet which is about 15-20 seeds. I have another that I will plant in a few weeks to space things out. My kids love those things.

Yes, that’s essentially what we use to neutralize low ph soil and water. A little goes a long way depending on the soil. I’d get a ph meter and some distilled water and test soil again after application. Water it in well also.

have y'all had light green leaves only in the middle of your tomato plants?
quote:
Definitely a nutrient deficiency. Problem was corrected not long after I put them in the ground.
Heh, I've got the opposite problem. Tomatoes looked good until I planted them, then they got light leaves in the middle and a couple are obviously going to die. Tomatoes from two different nurseries are behaving the same. It's not lack of nutrient, I used the recommended strength of Miracle Grow in the water. Could it be Round Up that I sprayed on the bed soil a week before? Trying to kill off all weeds - didn't really work, there are weeds popping up fine now. But I know tomatoes are really susceptible to Roundup. Could it be slightly too much fertilizer? Fungus in the soil? (leave touching the ground have gotten this for the last couple of years, but it's not acting like that at all).

I'm trying to figure out wtf you would put Roundup in a garden bed? Are you serious?

Sure, better living through chemicals. I did the same thing last year, no problems. It's supposed to be OK after a few days and I gave it a week. Maybe not long enough, though.

You do you but that would be a last resort for me

Roundup is safe to spray before planting as long as it is the regular roundup (glyphosate only). I mistakenly said a couple pages back that it doesn’t bind to the soil, but it does. That’s apparently what neutralizes it quickly.
Vegetable Garden Weed Management with Ron Strahan
Also as I mentioned a couple pages back, I’m extremely hesitant to use any herbicides within a hundred feet of my garden. That’s not to say it can’t be done.
As for your tomato issues, you could have plenty of nutrients in the soil and something could be preventing uptake. Have you had your soil tested?

Some Roundup products, however, contain a weed preventer called imazapic. These products, which are clearly labeled, can make the ground unsuitable for planting for up to four months and aren't suitable for use in vegetable gardens. It's important to read the label before using a Roundup product.
quote:
Glyphosate can stay in soil for up to six months, according to the National Pesticide Information Center.
quote:
Glyphosate is also toxic to earthworms and beneficial microbiotic life such as mycorrhizal fungi, which attach to plant roots and increase their efficiency at taking up water and nutrients, and Rhizobium bacteria, which fix nitrogen into the soil. Roundup can cause plant diseases like anthracnose and barley root-rot to become more virulent.
Just something to think about. It may not be absorbed through the plant roots but it definitely weakens your soil

This is why I use mulch and just pull weeds.

What kind of irrigation system are you guys using ? I bought a seep soaker hose for the first garden .

I just always thought Roundup was a big no-no in a veggie garden. I flame weed when I can

Roundup more harm to plants than weeds
Posted on 3/16/21 at 10:00 pm to WigSplitta22
You have to let that stuff degrade before planting stuff.
