Follow up…
These were planted last year May 2021 based off recommendations from here. They need to be cleaned and trimmed back some, but I’m very pleased with how fast it grew.

I wanted to hide the gas meter and cover up the garage window. It’s done really well. The tallest spikes are roughly 7.5ft tall in just over 14 months.

Just a followup and PSA if anyone needs a nice quick growing bush or hedge.

They are still going to at least double their current size if you don’t keep up with hedging

I need to plant about 100 feet hedge of these. How far apart did you space them?

I planted a 60’ hedge. 15 plants, 4’ center to center. I want mine to get 10-12’ tall. Time will tell if that’s the right spacing or not. I definitely shouldn’t have gone any closer.

Eta: mine were 15gal pots at planting.

These are spaced roughly 3 ft apart from center to center. There’s more than plenty of over coverage. I think you could easily take them to 4ft+ apart.

They’re planted on NW corner of house. Completely shaded until mid to late afternoon.

I’ve never touched them yet. They’re pretty much where I want to be in size. I’m going to keep them trimmed from here and approximately 6 ft in height.

this ^^^^^

cutting tops stops growing higher and when they fill out the way you like start cutting the sides and shaping them.

but as mentioned, you will have to keep after them trimming every couple of weeks

They are going to try to eat your house. You'll be doing a lot of trimming

4 ft off fence line and minimum 5 ft apart is the answer. Also make sure to plant them up pretty high, at least half the root ball above the ground.

Landscapers will plant them 2 ft off fence line and 3 ft apart. That’s too close and they will never maximize their growth. Plus it costs more because it’s more plants. I’ve even had someone say 8 ft apart but 5ft looks like the sweet spot. I have a ton of these planted

Thanks. I have a fence that got blown down in Ida. Gonna do these as a replacement because I want something 10-12’ tall to block the house next door.

I planted 3 last year under a live oak as a hedge. They haven't done as well as yours but they are about 5 ft tall. Pretty impressed since they are competing with an oak and only getting a couple of hours of sunlight

The biggest issue I have is fending off the whiteflies. I feel like I’m spraying neem oil constantly but it will really hinder their growth while they are young if you don’t spray. They also need a good bit of water the first year, especially competing with an oak tree. You will see them constantly wilting in summer heat like this. I suggest drip irrigation

Yep. We planted some earlier this year. They didn’t mind the drought and grew quite a bit already.

I know ppl have different views on pesticides. But I was fighting aphids and this knocked it right out. No issues since.

Looks good.
Sweet Viburnum is a great hedge and screen. It is almost indestructible. This is quite close to your house as others pointed out, so keep it in check.

Left unattended it gets 20 foot +

Good luck keeping those in check. Wrong plant for your situation.

Wanting to plant something like this also.
When is the best time to plant a row of these? The spot will get sunlight from sun up to sun down.

I’d say October or Feb/March. I planted in a full sun location in late February and they’ve done fine.

Was searching for a privacy hedge against a fence and have seen these recommended quite a bit.

Searched the board and found your thread, care to share an update a couple of years later?

Also, reading the thread seems like the sweet spot on plant spacing is 4 feet between plants on center and 4 feet set off of the fence as well?

Those look good but be prepared to trim those every time you cut your grass being that close to the house. I have 8 planted far from house but wanted to make like a privacy hedge with little to no trimming. Cardinals and Blue Jays love making nests in them because they get so thick vs a tree giving more of a challenge to those redtail hunters.
