Anyone have any experience with stump grinding? I have 3 Crepe Myrtle stumps about 3" high and the largest diameter being around 18". They have 2 grinders for rent at Home Depot with $150 being the price for the bigger one for the day. Doesn't seem like a hard task and Crepe Myrtle wood seems to be very soft and not really dense. One guy quoted me $150 a stump which I thought was really high so I'm leaning towards doing it myself.....any advice on if I should, shouldn't or if I do what to look out for or even techniques to use? Thanks.

You are correct in that the crepe myrtle wood fiber is soft. If you rent a grinder from Home Depot, you can take care of it yourself in no time. You could rent for half a day to save on money if thats an option.

I would ask around for more quotes from stump grinder folks, though. Many I've come across are usually not much more than renting the grinder yourself. $150 a stump is WAY high. You can probably get it for about $50 a stump if you ask around.

That's kinda what I was thinking/hoping. I will certainly get a few more quotes. Thanks.

Clean up really well after. Every little piece of tree that flies across your yard will start sprouting up new crepe myrtles in no time.

This guy knows what he’s talking about. I had 4 cut down and ground down 2 years ago and they are still sprouting from the spots they were cut down from.

What do you do to the sprouts? I cut 3 this weekend and they are going to be ground down when they come take out my big tree.

Mow them and spray with herbicide until they stop growing.

Well then what'd I'd do is get some nitrile or latex gloves and wipe the leaves on the sprouts with roundup or similar, just being careful it doesn't drip on the other foliage.

Drill multiple holes in the stumps, big, long holes. Fill them with concentrated Round up (or generic version). DO NOT DILUTE. Do this for a few weeks in a row. It will eventually kill the system.

This is what I'm doing, we have one that I'm removing from a flowerbed in the front yard. I cut it, drilled holes into it and have been filling the holes with Roundup. I'm going to give it a month or so to make sure it's completely dead before removing the stump.

Time is not on my side to do this.

Either dig up the piece of wood it is sprouting from, or cut the sprout and rub some round up on it using a q-tip.
