My advice. DONT. Ive tried for the last 3 years and if I even got a few small strawberries the racoons and squirrels get them before they get big or ripe.

I tend to fill my raised beds with them. My a-hole cocker spaniel LOVES to eat them so each year I have to figure out a new way to keep his snout out of there. I buy the bare root plants from Cleggs and have had great success over wintering for a big early spring crop. Those tend to be available towards the end of October.

They are fun to grow. Make sure you put fertilizer such as triple 13 in your row a little deeper than the plant. Mulch with hay to prevent weeds and a place for the berry to rest on and not stay wet. Watch out for slugs. The kids have fun picking them.

Grew great, but that's how I found out there were deer on the back of the property.

I let them be, from then on to see if they'd naturalize. By season three, the deer had killed them back too far to regrow.

Check determinate vs indeterminate to make sure you get the type you want.
Determinate had me picking a shite ton all at once and I had to learn to make jam and all types of things to preserve the load.

I'm thinking about getting a couple of those strawberry pots and using those. I live in a subdivision, so I don't have to worry too much about pests.

Kind of neat to plant them and see them grow, but that’s about the extent of it. Never got much more than a handful of berries that were actually edible.

Even if you're in a subdivision, birds will get them. Find some netting or something similar to put over the strawberries once they start to turn red

This may be the case if using " a couple of those strawberry pots."

I had a 4'x8' bed and the second year, they were more than I could eat.

I planted some about 4 years ago, never get many and the ones I do see have already been nibbled on so I never planted them again, but the ones I planted 4 years ago always come back on their own.

Rocks painted with red nail polish will keep the birds off. Put them out before your berries start turning red.

Plant Camarosa or Camino real, that’s what lsu ag center sells and what a lot of the strawberry farmers grow. They are very vigorous and grow plenty of big dark berries. I used to grow 25 plants in a 3x12 bed and we were rolling in berries every year. My kids wouldn’t let them make it inside the house.

I mulched with pine needles.

The only berry that I liked more than the two mentioned above is Florida festival. Hard to find but the sweetest strawberry I’ve ever eaten. Tasted like they had sugar on them. Grew very well also.

This works. Tried it the last year I grew.
