I'm looking at planting strawberries this year and I'm trying to figure out what variety to plant. I'd like to keep it local with Tangi or Klondike, but I can't seem to find anywhere that sells those plants.

What varieties of strawberries do y'all grow and does anyone grow Louisiana varieties?

I have whatever they sell at Lowes. The third year they exploded, more strawberries than we could eat. Zone 8. Full Sun.

Do strawberries need really good light or to be trellised? I’ve only tried once and that was 15 years ago, dog I had pulled them out of the ground maybe 4 months after planting them.

I planted some Camino Real bare root plants a few months ago. That’s what they had at my local nursery. We just picked the first few strawberries last week. Pretty good.

They prefer full sun. They’re a perennial. Very cold hardy. They do not need to be trellised. They’ll make fruit in the spring and fall (when it’s cooler.) During the summer (when temps get above 90) they’ll stop producing fruit and send out runners and concentrate on growing more foliage.

Thanks for the replies. Guess I'll check out the Camino Reals.

I'm in N.O. have had little luck with harvesting them before the birds peck the hell out of them, so I quit growing them a while back.

I did row cover one year to try to protect the plants but that was a PITA to deal with when wanting to pick them. Now I just buy flats when I want some.

Update for anyone who cares: I picked up two dozen second year plants shortly after receiving feedback on this thread. first dozen was Florida Festival and second dozen was Chandler. Between the two, the Florida Festivals are hands down better than the Chandlers. They almost taste like they have sugar on them, whereas the Chandlers taste more traditionally tart. If anyone's looking, I highly recommend the festivals.

I'm in Alabama andI grow the Ozark Beauty variety. These are everbearing and produce most of the year. Thought I lost them from a weed that took over the garden and strawberry patch last fall. Cleaned the bed out two weeks ago and have blooms coming on as of today. I have 16 plants now but probably will get two hanging plants for use to start the runners so I can get up to 24. Cheapest way to grow strawberries. The 16 plants produced about three or four gallons last year.

Now my four blueberry bushes and eight blackberries put out. Door to the freezer is still full. Used them all winter and gave alot away last year. They're looking even better this year.

Thanks guys.
