I got the hybrid solar/grid 24k EG4 unit from signature solar, came with 7 panels outputting up to 3200 watts. It was a diy install and the line sets bolted together. No pump or welding necessary. It has wifi and has been solid. I did have to do a wifi reconnect a few months ago but that was painless. Cost was also around 3200. You can get the non hybrid version that is grid only and has wifi much cheaper. I'm keeping a 2700' barndominium with 60% of that in 10' ceilings and the rest 12' ceilings at 72° You can get wifi remote controls on amazon that duplicates your remote and turns the system on remotely so there's workarounds for non wifi systems. I prefer the wifi as mine tracks solar consumption and grid consumption and pretty much everything else. DIY to me means bolt together line sets.

Some info on my recent installation. I am very happy with the unit so far. Way over cools my space and my electric bill has barely budged for two months

Following. Would like a DIY model for approx same size, 12,000 BTU unit.

I installed a pioneer single zone 24k unit myself. i already had gauges and a pump from some auto repairs (probably $200 on amazon). if you're mechanically inclined, it's not difficult. I had 220 in the area so pulled power from there. has been working like a champ for over a year.

Is it better to go with HVAC contractor's preferred units or a DIY unit with the pre-charged lines? I'd hire an electrician to pull the 220 + subpanel and have a general guy install the unit (probably still $1000+ in labor)
This is the unit I think is best for my space:
Mr. Cool - 24000 BTU
ETA: I think I know my answer and will start calling contractors around here for their pricing.

I've installed 3 Daikin units with good luck. I did invest in the proper tools (gauges, micron gauge, valve core tool, flare tool, flare nut torque wrench, vacuum pump) and used flaretite seals for extra protection against flare leaks. You'll also need access (or rent) a N2 bottle for a proper air test.
It's not cheap to get the right tools and do it right but it's not cheap to pay someone who may or may not do it right either.
Lots of detailed installation threads on garage journal forum.

or a DIY unit with the pre-charged lines?
All the units are pre-charged, the refrigerant is in the outside unit (including Mr. Cool)
The only difference with a Mr. Cool system is a pre-terminated and pre-evacuated lineset with quick connects so you don't have to cut, flare (or braze) the lineset to a custom length.
This is a pro and a con as you are committed to a fixed lineset length with a Mr. Cool ssytem and coiling up that extra lineset is hard to hide (looks like shite) and there is much debate on whether the extra coiled up lineset becomes a future trap or impedement to refrigerant flow.

I have had a Mrcool for 5 years with no issue. The lineset runs through my attic and I actually needed an extension as there was no exterior wall. Has been really good so far.

I just put in a Stealth 12k unit, it's similar to the Mr. Cool where the lines are already vacuumed. Working great so far, blows snowballs. I installed it by myself in about 3 hours. It was cheaper than the Mr. Cools...
