Yard is in ok shape but has some weeds. Should I put down some postemergent and get all the weeds out of the way before fertilizing? Also what postemergent do you recommend for St. Aug. Houston area?

Yes. Might as well put down a pre emerge while you're at it.

I personally wouldnt even think about fertilizing yet. I would wait til maybe May. As far as what kind, its impossible to say. Taking a soil sample would be a great place to start.

16-4-8 is a good basic lawn fertilizer.

Prodiamine for st aug. I will say that it is a root inhibitor so if your st aug has weak spots I don’t like a root inhibiting pre em.

As far as ferting, is your yard at 50% green up?

Ferting and weed control can be done at the same time.

Yes. Lawn spray or Spot spray this, with follow up in 2 or 3 weeks if needed.

Fertilization in Houston - after you cut your lawn twice for grass growth. Probably early April.

ETA: Spray that herbicide mixture per 1000 sq ft of lawn.

I see my leg.

The only thing that recipe card failed to mention was to apply that mixture to 1000 sq ft of lawn. Which it says if you read the labels on the products.

I corrected it in my post for the OP.

As ronk said no. Not until the lawn is established, next spring, maybe this fall. The label on the pre-emerge herbicides clearly states not to use on newly sodded, sprigged or plugged lawns until grass is rooted/established. That also applies to post-emergent herbicides.

Crawdude said it more eloquently than I did. I am a huge fan of keeping as much herbicide off of a lawn as possible. Your lawns best defense against weeds is to be thick, mowed and watered correctly, and fertilized properly. If you don’t have a problem with crabgrass then don’t use pre em for it, if you have 5-10 weeds then don’t blanket app spot spray em.

Recommend Nitro-Phos Weed and Feed, any Ace or Houston garden center will have it. All research is conducted at A&M for Nitro-Phos...according to the owner of my local Ace. They have a feeding schedule on their website with all of their recommended products and fertilizer timings.

Should I treat my entire lawn or just the areas, which are lot, that have weeds. I already have the weed licker products and will put out Friday or Saturday.

Either is fine, but the whole yard if possible. The Atrazine will give you residual to keep more broad leaf weeds from coming back up.

Well that’s a judgement call, but if you have areas of the lawn that are heavily weed infested and others areas that are not, for your first spray you might want to do the entire lawn. My rational for that is that perhaps the areas not heavily weed infested do have young, small weeds you are not observing as we all tend to focus on larger weeds in our lawn plus the fact that atrazine also is a decent pre-emergent herbicide, as well as post-emergent, so you’ll be getting some pre-emergent herbicide benefits in the currently non-weedy area of your lawn. Thereafter, any subsequent post-emergent sprays you might make focus solely on the weedy areas of the lawn.

Here is my “cheat sheet” for the same formulation which does state to spray the mixture per 1000 sq ft of lawn.

Most of the weeds you see today are cool season weeds and will be gone by summer with mowing.
