I hear people say that you should have your septic tank pumped out every 2-5 years depending on the number of people in the home that are using it.

I've been in my house for 24 years with a family of 5 and have never had to pump it out once.

Is that normal?

I’ve never had mine pumped. Don’t do it unless you having problems and even then just try to fix the problem first.

My filter bed collapsed and I fixed that. Problem solved immediately.

ETA My parents built there house almost 23 years ago and have never pumped theirs either.

Do you flush wet wipes? I’ve heard they can cause issues with sewage treatment plants, not sure about septic tanks.

Depends on size of tank and how it’s used. I have a family of 6 on a 1k gallon tank and I’m on a maintenance plan, I inspected every 3yrs and pumped if necessary. I almost always need the pump out.

I use RidX every month.
I'm not sure if that is helping or not. I've only been in the house a year or so

If the only thing that’s put down them is human waste and biodegradable TP then pumping is never necessary. People need pumping that either over use it for the size or that put items like “flushable” wipes that don’t degrade fast enough.

Never flush anything but tp. Don’t use rid-x or anything else.

What's wrong with RidX? I figured at worst it would do nothing good or bad.

Didn’t say there was anything wrong with it. Just said I don’t use it.

About 10 years ago, Calcasieu parish inspected all houses with septic tanks. A clear plastic pipe was put down into the tank and pulled out. If the pipe showed to be more than 50 % sludge, we were required to have it pumped out. Mine tested at 55 % and cost $ 325 to have it pumped out.

The aerators were also checked and about half of the homes [about 15 years old] in this area were found to not be working.
