Replacing appliances…

With companies charging $100 for a house call, and HD and Lowe’s doing no interest for a year, how old does an appliance need to be before you just buy new. My fridge is probably 15 years old and is not stainless steel. I can get a new turnkey for $150/month.

I YouTube fixes on my appliances and have saved a ton doing my own repairs.
Once the mother board or a part worth over 1/4 of a replacement breaks, that's when I look at buying new. Many fixes are under $100 and last the lifetime of the appliance.
I tend to buy the most basic appliances, because fixing them is cheap. No bluetooth, no wifi, none of that crap.

I am horrible at fixing things. These service calls are a scam. You’re getting charged a minimum of $250 regardless vs just buying new. Especially when said appliance is real old and doesn’t match my others.

General rule:
If you can repair for half the cost of new, repair. Otherwise replace.

Our refrigerator is a Sears Kenmore from 1987. Still going strong. Very few repairs. Last fall we replaced the door seal for first time .The repairman said with door seal replaced it should last a long time. And this was a Maytag guy who could have sold us a new one. If you have an American made appliance made by a reputable company and it has worked well for you, fix it don’t replace it as the new stuff, he’ll all new stuff is Chinese crap.

Oh yea and if you are about functionality or appreciate good workmanship and value then fix what still works and looks good. If you got to keep up with the Jones’ and impress people by what you buy as opposed to what you do then do not listen to me.

I have very little traffic in the house. Will probably be selling in the next couple years, so there is the “investment” part, too

Well, that’s a different story then.

It sounds like you’ve made up your mind on which way to go. There no shame in it. Buy the new appliance.

I got a quote for our ice maker for $650 to FIX IT. Brand new $1100
Tech said you’re lucky to get over 4 years with ice makers.

Actually I’ll fix it if it’s under $300 and the repair guy says it still has life in it.

I have a Kenmore as well purchased in 1999. It is my shop fridge so it endures warmer temps in the summer. Took on about 18” of water when we flooded. Still going strong.

My ‘99 Kenmore quit working around Christmas. Tried to fix it, but the first part I replaced (defrost timer) was not the culprit. So, I bought a new one. Went with a no bells and whistles type. No ice or water through the door, etc.
Long story short, figured out the problem with the old Kenmore (thermostat) replaced it and it’s going strong as my backup fridge.
