Why would you wait for it to get that low instead of being proactive? I've got $13k in it, so I'm gonna check that oil before the sensor shuts it off (likely at a lower level than I'm comfortable with).

I paid about $22k for a 30kw Cummins last September, but it was on a new construction so we were able to easily plan for it. I've learned that sometimes retrofitting can be a lot more expensive.

Covington? Who did your install?

Add me to the list of Optimize EGS customers. They just put in 22KW Generac unit at my place for right at 10k. They were a pleasure to work with. FWIW, I wanted Kohler but the local rep was shady as hell. Found him selling units on FB marketplace for almost $1,600 less than he quoted me. Also seemed to go out of his way to poor mouth the brand. Wanted that Kohler but very happy with the Generac. Included whole house surge protector and wifi.

Whatever you decide, go with propane. In large neighborhoods, the pressure on NG pipelines will fluctuate when many whole home generators are running. Rent or buy a 500 gallon propane tank and you won't have any worries.

So what's the advantage of liquid cooled over air cooled?

Much more robust cooling system and can run longer without worry of heat damage. Can also have larger engines and power producing capabilities.

Air cooled generators top out at about 24-26kw. Liquid cooled is hundreds of kw.

I’d be worried about an air cooled generator on a day like we’ve had in the past few weeks. 100+ temps and extended run time can be a problem.

Taffeta summed it up pretty well but note the extra maintenance on a liquid cooled unit. It’s essentially a car motor so it’ll have the extra maintenance associated with the cooling system plus the enclosure has a much larger footprint and weighs a lot more. But if you can afford the unit, it’s definitely quieter and more efficient.

It’s been great. I live north of town and we have pretty dirty power. We lose it once a month or so and my s/o works from home, so it’s been super helpful.

It’s less than a year old so time will tell as to durability and reliability. I also haven’t had to use it throughout some extended outage, but I’ve been really happy with it so far. It’s also shockingly quiet.
