Have rats that look like they are running along the bottom of the walls outside on the patio. Have found poop, urine, and eaten acorns along the walls. I can’t find any evidence that they have gotten inside the house.

What would y’all do to get rid of them?

At a different house they were getting in a shed and I was able to put out a bunch of the big plastic spring loaded traps with the teeth on them to kill a few then they left. But I am nervous to just put those outside and catch something bigger like a raccoon or neighborhood cat. I cut some holes in cardboard boxes and put traps in there but haven’t been able to catch anything.

Any ideas?

There are tons of live-catch rat traps on the market if you choose to mess with that. However I would just use the appropriate sized mouse/rat trap and cut a cardboard box to shield the trap from cats.

Of course, don’t bait it with anything that would be attractive to a cat.

small live trap with peanut butter/sunflower seeds. Execute him with a pellet gun to the noggin after you catch him.

Live traps like have a heart work great but then you have to dispose of them, I shoot them in the head with a BB gun but it’s not the easiest. I don’t recommend carrying them in your car and dropping them off somewhere as they aren’t exactly escape proof.

They make pet and kid proof trap boxes it’s what you see in commercial areas but I do catch squirrels in them, it is what it is:

Don’t know if this is an option but we have a cat at our hunting camp and she’s an assassin. It’s two houses and a trailer and we don’t see a rat, mouse, snake or bird around

There's a guy here who likes to play with snakes. See if he will bring you some snakes to place around the house.

If you have a birdfeeder on the patio, get rid of it. I had a patio rat problem until I took mine down.

Can attest to the fact that the birdfeeder brings rats and squirrels that will make your warm comfortable house their home. The rats were nesting in my patio deck box, those yellow bars posted took care of them in there, and in my camper.

I’m dealing with rats in my barn, cow shed, and chicken coop. I’ve had a lot of success using the Victor electric traps. I’ve used the old school traps, poison, and this electric one. I think the squirrels trip the old school ones, and I’m hesitant to use too much poison bc of the dogs, cats and chickens I have around.

CCI 22LR shotshells have been really effective as well

I might go to hell for this, but I use the sticky traps and screw them to a thin piece of wood so they can’t run away with the trap stuck to their tail or something.

They say that the stickiness degrades over time, but I left a trap out for about two months, through the freeze / snow event, and still caught a mouse about a week ago. It’s inhumane, but rats/mice are not humans. It’s better to find them already dead than alive, because I then have to take a shovel to the neck and I don’t like doing that.

Here’s my experience:
Set kill traps in attic all of the time regardless of whether or not there is an issue. I have a camera facing mine so they’re easy to check.
You can use bait block poison outside if you don’t have pets. It works great.
NEVER use poison in your attic.
Always make sure attic is sealed up.
Best solution is outdoor cat. We got a couple stray cats on our block a few years ago that a neighbor fed and the rats just disappeared. The strays left and the rats came back.
