Rat trap placement question

Sitting in my backyard and just caught, out of the corner of my eye, a rat climbing in through a small hole on the side of my detached garage. Live uptown in NO so I know there are always rats/mice around.
Is the best place for me to set a trap right outside the hole, or somewhere inside the garage?

Inside by hole so other animals don’t disturb it. Peanut butter and sunflower seeds on old metal traps. Cheap and works.

And tie the trap off to something. I've had rats not die right away and they will try to find some place to hide and drag the trap with them.
I use the big snap type rat traps and tie a piece of nylon string around the metal staple that holds the trigger arm in place and then around anything that won't be easily moved.
Place the traps along a wall since rodents like to travel close to walls.

Put it with the snap closing towards the wall. Rats/mice will run along the wall. Basically they will likely trigger the trap if they go for the bait or try to cross over it.

Personally I’d close the hole and then place a trap right outside of it. But you may catch a bird or some other animal if you place it out uncovered. I’ll take shoeboxes or others of similar sizes and cover them if I don’t have anything else.
Definitely tie them down

Peanut butter definitely works but is easily licked off, especially by mice on the large trap. I jam some meat into the tube and have caught dozens without reloading.

Get a cat
Feed it every other day

traps
They're smart enough to learn to avoid, so supposedly it's much better to set several all at once(in corners and along walls), instead of hoping to get by with 1 or 2 used over an extended period of time.

Living in N.O. it is not unusual to see rats no matter how clean you live. It is just a fact of life in urban areas, especially where older homes are located.
I only see them in my back shed or every once in a while in my woodworking shop. When I do see one, I'll set out at least 4 snap traps baited with peanut butter and usually within a day or so, I've got the rat caught.
And if you see one, you likely have more, so I keep the traps baited until a fair amount of time passes without a catch, then put them away until next time.

Just one bite poison, will kill them all, they make outdoor baitstations for them
