what are people pouring/leaving on these stones causing all of these stains? we went with marble, notoriously prone to staining. before we bought it i got a sample from the stone company and ran tests with salsa, ketchup, toothpaste, lime juice, coffee, and olive oil. i left it for a day and a week and the only thing that made a mark was the acid over a week (salsa and lime juice) and that was only the finish, not a stain.
we're almost 3 years in with marble with kids that don't give a shite what they leave where and have had no issues.
eta: why are people so obsessed with having perfect and pristine countertops forever? every other part of our houses wears naturally because, you know, we live there. yet somehow countertops aren't allowed to show wear.

quote:For us, it was water absorption leaving a much darker blob on the quartzite. It happened because where the hole was drilled wasn't sealed on the inside. When we had guests over, they made a mess in the kitchen and we didn't notice until the next morning after the water absorbed in it due to it not being sealed correctly. We took the soap dispenser out and let it air out, and it's back to as good as new (it took a couple months).

We have no issues anywhere else on our countertops, and I doubt we'll have issues again since it's being resealed.
quote:I'm with you here. I wanted to go with Oyster White marble in the kitchen because I think it's an awesome look. I think the natural aging and patina would look amazing. The wife wasn't a fan of that prospect, so she won out. Countertops get used, they will get chipped, they will get markings on them and I don't see a problem with that. Try convincing the wives though.

I have Cambria in my Nola condo and it's been great. But, you will probably have a seam. It's no maintenance though.
We're remodeling a condo in Little Rock right now, and we're actually considering porcelain, but I know it's more delicate. I'm scared of marble. If we find the right quartzite, we'll probably go with that. I haven't found a quartz I've liked for the space or I would be going with Cambria or similar again.

Ours are not poured or left out water stains... ours seems to have absorbed moisture from the home leaving a "stretch mark" or "spider vein" pattern on much of the surface.
Most guests don't notice or say anything about it, but I remember how pristine it was when installed, so this bugs the hell out of me daily.
Here's a sample pic.

i thought that crackle look was the look sought after for quartzite. wife wanted french75 but it was 3x as much as marble. so happy we went with marble with all the complaints about quartzite.
also, just say no to quartz, looks terribly fake, especially when they try to add veins add make it look like marble.

If in the Baton Rouge area, Michael Paul's Natural Stone is a great fabricator and installer.
This is what I went with. I selected Marseille from MDS Imports on Choctaw Drive in Baton Rouge.

This is the cleaner I use to keep the stone in pristine condition.

I have marble on the island, with dark granite countertops along the kitchen perimeter. The marble has held up nicely over the past two or so years, no stains so far. Pleasantly surprised, since I figured our kids would ruin it within a month.

That’s incredibly beautiful.
I’m still pissed I let my installer talk me into doing a seam on our sink/counter slab. It is a simple L shape, and in my mind it should be one piece.
But they convinced me it would likely break.
Seeing this done right makes me happy for you and upset at my installers.
I chose poorly and it sucks.

Thank you. I'm very pleased with how my renovation project went. I painted the cabinets (not shown in previous pictures) and my entire house from ceiling to baseboard.
If you ever decide to redo yours, give Michael Paul an opportunity. They were great to work with. I wanted no seams on my island bar, so I had to find a big enough slab of quantize to accommodate. There is one small seam left of the sink cut out that you have to look incredibly hard for in order to find it.

Meaux can you add a pic? I’d love to see where the seam is.
And yes that Marseilles is gorgeous. What my eye was drawn to was one of the taj mahal slabs. So so pretty.
Why am I worried about it getting messed up? Honestly it’s spending likely a ton of money .. and I just would like it to stay nice and pretty.
It’s a shop in Abbeville that works with a stone company out of Broussard.

This is the crap I got by choosing a wimp installer company. Grrrr

The other option was no seam? Our current granite was installed crappily .. but we didn’t build the house. I hope we don’t have any mess ups.

We have quartzite and it’s a pain in the arse to keep clean. Also have a chip. FML

Are you using that cleaner on quartz or quartzite? Our installer said to only use soap and water for quartzite. I feel like I need something additional

Silestone ftw, no complaints looks great and easy to clean

Yes, I am. This is the only cleaner (see previous post) that I use. This was recommended to me by my fabricator.

It doesn't look bad, but you know that it could and should have been done better. Have you noticed the seams splitting any?
It can all be fixed. For a price.

I got our quotes back .. taj mahal was less than Mont Blanc but TM was my favorite anyway.
Questions:
Did y’all pay for the chip minimized on the sink area?
Did y’all use flat bars on the snack bar side (if y’all have that .. we currently have the wood whatever they’re called).
(I’ll also have to have a seam due to the size of the slab.)

I am not sure if I understand your question here. I paid one set price to my fabricator. I was able to get the stone company to come down on their pricing, and have them notify my fabricator, which did bring down my pricing somewhat.

Yes. This was "extra" but included in my price.

There's something called a "chip minimizer" .. it's something that they do to the rim of the stone around the sink to minimize chips in the stone. It's extra of about $500 .. not a lot but just wondering if anyone had thoughts on it being worth it or not.
The flat bars are like close to $400 for 3 ... but if we do that we have to restain under the wood supports that they'll remove -- and we don't know the color (we bought, not built the house).
