Thanks for the responses everyone. It seems like the consensus is to just stick with grass. If I do anything I'll put mulch or some turf to the bottom sandbox section. We weren't going to put sand anyway and since it won't get any sun maybe I'll cover it. I guess I'll chance it with the rest and see how it goes. It would be a bitch to haul away the mulch when we get rid of it too. I think she's going to be over it in a few years but we'll see. Luckily, my brother is going to come help me put it together and he's more handy than I am so hopefully it doesn't take us too long.

Rubber mulch is TERRIBLE.

Gets very hot, spreads into the yard, likely has carcinogens, huge pain in the arse to remove when you're done with swing set, etc.

Had the same question a few years back. Went with grass as mulch was expensive and more work. Looking back, grass was the right choice. at no point was there an incident that had me wishing I had the rubber.

I just put up a swingset for my kids. I bought one of these, cut it, and stapled it to the underside of the sandbox area. Big fan so far, highly recommend.

I vote for the rubber mulch. I'd pay $1,000 right now to never how to mow or weedeat under my swingset.

I'd look into those rubber snap-together mats that they use in home gyms as opposed to the rubber mulch. At least when time comes to remove it you will just have to unsnap the pieces and pick them up.

Only issue is having to get your ground pretty level and packed down for them to work well, but very doable.

I would not use rubber mulch. Read up on the chemical exposure issues with that and Astro turf.
