Late winter. I cut anything less than 1/2" in diameter.

Definitely don't do this:

I bought a house that had 31 of them, and about 15 of them were over 25 years old. I've cut down about half of them.
I don't think there is a tree out there that does more havoc on a drainage system all year long than a Crepe Myrtle, or puts more shite into a swimming pool on daily basis.

Having one out by the road by your mailbox, cool.
Having one in the middle of your courtyard, living hell.

you can prune those things any time. I've got numerous crepe myrtles and have pruned at all times of the year for many years.

This is correct. I cut on mine all the time but I leave the umbrella.

I have several that just came up and one I have to take down which will require the tractor and bucket to get the roots out. It was planted in 1975 and to say it’s large is an understatement.

Like that will take care of it.

I was taught the rule of thumb is more like rule of pinky, in that you don't prune any branches on them thicker than your pinky. That can be hard if you inherited the tree.

How the hell does one kill off young shoots growing from roots that are in a flower bed. We replanted our beds and everywhere a new bush was planted, dam crepe myrtles are shooting up.

This worked for me but you have to be persistent as it wlll take a while. Apply it to the freshly cut shoots as they come up.

Did the same thing at our house. It has 3 or 4 and I cut them all out. Rather enjoyed it.

This. I have a very big old one close by. Love it. Yes a mess. I did take down many along my drive way, but I am able to keep the cut when cutting grass.
